UK's Labour to impose "real" bank split if elected: Miliband

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Britain's Labour opposition leader launched an offensive against banks on Sunday ahead of his party's annual conference, promising a "real separation" of retail and investment banking and to raise the top rate of personal income tax.

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government has said it will implement the recommendations of an independent review by Oxford University economist John Vickers into how banks should be structured in the wake of the global credit crisis.

But critics, including Vickers, have lamented the watering down of some of the proposals - including the definition of the ring fence between retail and investment arms and the ratio of loans to capital that banks can hold on their books.

Britain's banks - including Barclays, RBS, Lloyds and HSBC - will have until 2019 to make the changes with the government committed to write the new rules into law by 2015.

Labour accuses the government of caving in to fierce lobbying by the financial sector.

"Either they can do it themselves - which frankly is not what has happened over the past year - or the next Labour government will, by law, break up retail and investment banks," Labour leader Ed Miliband said.

"The banks and the government can change direction and say that they are going to implement the spirit and principle of Vickers to the full - that means the hard ring-fence between retail and investment banking. We need real separation, real culture change. Or we will legislate."

Some in the Conservative-led government had been concerned that punishing the financial sector could damage the competitiveness of the City of London, a major global financial center, and potentially harm a crucial part of Britain's recession-hit economy.

Miliband's warning to the banks comes ahead of his party's annual conference in the northern English city of Manchester, where he is under pressure to explain to voters how it would govern if elected in 2015.

Miliband, who replaced former prime minister Gordon Brown as Labour leader after that defeat, has struggled to make a good impression on voters so far. While opinion polls show Labour would win an election tomorrow, his own personal approval ratings languish below those of Prime Minister David Cameron.

Seeking to capitalize on a perception of Cameron's government as too friendly to the wealthy in an era of austerity, Miliband said Labour would reverse a tax cut for the highest earners in this year's budget which saw the highest rate of income tax drop to 45 percent from 50 percent.

Oklahoma refinery boiler explosion kills worker

HOUSTON (Reuters) - One worker was killed in a boiler explosion on Friday at CVR Energy Inc.'s 70,000 barrel per day (bpd) Wynnewood, Oklahoma, refinery, a company spokeswoman said in a statement.

Another refinery employee was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, according to Garvin County Sheriff Larry Rhodes.

There was no fire following the blast, which occurred at about 6:20 p.m. local time (1120 GMT) because the refinery was shut down for a 40-day overhaul, Rhodes said.

"There was no threat to Wynnewood or the surrounding communities," Rhodes said.

Neither the company nor Rhodes gave details about the injuries employees sustained in the blast.

Boilers are required at a refinery to generate steam for electrical power production, and for use in the crude oil refining process.

"All other employees are accounted for at this time," said CVR spokeswoman Angie Dasbach. "Company officials are assessing the situation and will provide updates as information becomes available."

CVR acquired the Wynnewood refinery when it purchased Gary-Williams Energy Corp for $525 million in December.

Wynnewood is located 67 miles south of the state capital of Oklahoma City.

Analysis: Contracts buy Canada auto workers time, not expansion

TORONTO/VANCOUVER (Reuters) - New Canadian labor contracts secured by the Detroit Three automakers this week are unlikely to lower costs enough to persuade the industry to make fresh investments in the country and reverse a decade-long contraction.

A strong Canadian dollar and cheaper labor elsewhere remain powerful forces discouraging Ford Motor Co , Fiat SpA's Chrysler Group LLC, and General Motors Co from making new commitments to assemble vehicles in Canada, industry experts say.

Unless there is an unexpected economic resurgence in North America, the best that the Canadian Auto Workers union can expect is for the industry to maintain current production levels over the next four years, auto analysts say. At the same time, the country will likely lose more market share to Mexico and the southern United States, where output is expected to rise.

"The sector in Canada is really suffering greatly. Not at the hands of the CAW, but at the hands of the loonie," said Kristin Dziczek, director of the labor and industry group at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, referring to the Canadian dollar by its colloquial name.

"No matter what the CAW did, lowered costs, kept things the same, a dollar in the U.S. goes a little farther than it does in Canada. And it's not just for wages, but also for that investment dollar," she said.

Her remarks came as the CAW wrapped up six weeks of tough negotiations with the Detroit Three, sealing a tentative agreement with hold-out Chrysler late Thursday. [ID:nL1E8KQ59O] Ford and GM workers have ratified their deals. Chrysler employees vote this weekend.

The Chrysler deal largely mirrors the four-year pacts reached last week with Ford and GM. The deals freeze wages for existing workers for three out of four years, and cut pay and pension benefits for new employees.

While the union pushed hard to secure new vehicle production for Canadian plants, the companies held back such promises.

There were some new jobs promised, including 600-plus at Ford and 1,000 at GM, but at best that will only offset other losses. For example, GM's consolidated line, which employs 2,000 workers, is set to shut down in 2014.

THE POWER OF THE DOLLAR

Canada's auto industry reached peak employment and output in the late 1990s when the Canadian dollar was near record lows. A weaker Canadian currency reduced the cost of Canadian-sourced labor and materials when costs were converted back to U.S. dollars.

But a 50-percent-plus surge in the value of the Canadian dollar over the past decade - on Friday it was worth $1.01 - reversed those cost advantages and has made Canada the most expensive place in the world to assemble vehicles, according to the Detroit Three.

The companies insisted in this round of talks that Canadian labor costs had to fall to match those of employees in the United States, or there was a risk that production could exit Canada, particularly in the case of Chrysler.

With the new agreements fresh off the drawing board, calculations of future Canadian labor costs are hard to come by and the companies will not provide precise figures. But Ford chief negotiator Stacey Allerton said the pact gives the automaker significant cost savings.

While base wages for existing workers were unchanged at an average of $34 an hour versus an average of $28 for United Auto Workers members in the United States, some health benefit costs were trimmed. New hire costs are "in the ballpark" of the UAW's contract, Allerton said.

Even so, Tony Faria, an auto industry expert and professor at the University of Windsor in Ontario, said the CAW didn't go far enough to cut costs and level the field, even with the United States, where labor rates are much higher than in Mexico.

"We are not going to see investment from the Detroit Three in the short run. I would find it hard to imagine new investment in the long term," he said. "The companies can put any new investment elsewhere at a lower labor cost."

If Canada maintains production of 2.5 million-2.7 million vehicles a year, with North American production expanding, the country's share of the market would shrink to 14-15 percent over the next decade from about 15.7 percent now, said Dennis DesRosiers of Richmond Hill, Ontario-based DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc.

NO GAME CHANGER

Although labor costs are undoubtedly important, they are "not a game changer" for automakers' overall costs, said UBS auto sector analyst Colin Langan.

Analysts estimate that labor represents between 5 and 10 percent of the total cost of a vehicle.

Parts can contribute up to 70 percent, CAW economist Jim Stanford said. Although the bulk of these are imported, some are sourced locally, he said, comprising roughly 17 percent of vehicle cost.

"We've been talking for the last four months, non-stop, about how workers have to be competitive with other jurisdictions," he said.

"Now it's time to talk about how policy must be competitive with other jurisdictions, and that includes the Brazils and the Koreas and even the Americas of this world, where their governments are fully engaged in enhancing and motivating investment in the sector," he said.

Bill Pochiluk, CEO of Automotive Compass LLC, a consulting firm in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said that if Canada wants to halt a long-term auto industry slide, it should introduce a similar policy to Brazil. Faced with a strong local currency and a flood of cheap Mexican vehicle imports, Brazil insisted that vehicles assembled in Mexico have a higher portion of parts sourced from elsewhere in Latin America.

"I'm concerned about the pathway to the long term and what needs to be done. And I think improving Canadian content is the best way to get there," Pochiluk said.

The CAW has lobbied federal and provincial governments in Canada to adopt policies to better protect the auto sector, but the current government's track record of favoring free-market policies suggests little likelihood of success.

Mars Curiosity rover discovers ancient streambed on planet's surface (+video)

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced.

By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / September 27, 2012

NASA's Curiosity rover found evidence for an ancient, flowing stream on Mars at a few sites, including the rock outcrop pictured here, which the science team has named 'Hottah' after Hottah Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. This image mosaic was taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mastcam telephoto lens on its 39th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has discovered what appears to be an ancient streambed, suggesting that water once flowed in large volumes ? perhaps hip-deep in places ? across the Martian surface.

Photos from the Curiosity rover?have revealed several different rocky outcrops that contain stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. Some of these stones are rounded and large, indicating that they were transported relatively long distances across the Red Planet surface by water.

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced today (Sept. 27).

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," Curiosity co-investigator William Dietrich, of the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement. [The Search for Water on Mars (Photos)]

"Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them," Dietrich added. "This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The findings came after researchers studied photographs of three different outcrops inside Gale Crater, where Curiosity touched down on Aug. 5.

The first outcrop, known as Goulburn, lies a few feet from the rover's landing site. Curiosity spotted the other two ? called Link and Hottah ? as it's been rambling toward an area called Glenelg, its first major science target.

Photos of Link really got the team thinking of long-ago stream flows, Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told reporters today. And images of Hottah, which juts from the Red Planet surface at an odd angle, pretty much sealed the deal.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," Grotzinger said in a statement.

On Earth, tilted outcrops are usually the result of tectonic activity. But Hottah could have been deformed by a nearby impact or other process, Grotzinger said.

The?water on Mars?likely flowed several billion years ago, researchers said, though an exact timeframe will be tough to determine. But the extent of the system that produced the outcrops ? and the surrounding alluvial fan and channels ? suggests that it wasn't produced in a single shot.

Rather, water was likely flowing over a relatively long chunk of time, scientists said.

"I'm comfortable to argue that it's certainly beyond the thousand-year timescale, but we're still gathering data to go further with that," Dietrich told reporters today.?

The team has not yet analyzed Link or Hottah with Curiosity's 10 different science instruments; rather, the researchers' conclusions are based on images of?Mars?snapped by the rover's Mast Camera. But those pictures capture plenty of evidence, Grotzinger said.

"In some cases, when you do geology, a picture's worth a thousand words," he said.

The $2.5 billion?Mars rover Curiosity?is about 50 days into a roughly two-year mission to determine if the Gale Crater area has ever been capable of supporting microbial life.

Despite the outcrop discoveries, the six-wheeled robot's ultimate destination remains the base of Mount Sharp, a 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) mountain that rises from Gale's Center. The mysterious mountain's foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

PICKING up his eighth Deadly Award has not made Troy Cassar-Daley complacent.

Speaking to The Daily Examiner yesterday while waiting to pick up his mum, Irene Daley, from the airport in Melbourne, Mr Cassar-Daley said these awards were always fresh for him.

Mr Cassar-Daley won the 2012 Deadly Album of the Year award for his 2011 recording, Home.

"I'm really stoked. It's lovely to win this award and it's recognition for all the work we've put in," he said.

"It's good to know it's recognised as a good record."

Mr Cassar-Daley said the Deadly Award, his second for best album, made him aware of the importance of being a role model for his people.

"Lots of young people see me as a role model, so it's very important the way I conduct myself," he said.

"There were a lot of young kids there last night; they're going to be the next generation.

"They're going to be up there receiving these awards, and not too long in the future."

He also paid tribute to the support he received from his home town of Grafton during his early days.

"That early groundswell of support set me up for where I am today," he said.

The Deadly Awards celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement in music, sport, entertainment and community, were held at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night.

Spain's tomato-throwing festival may charge fees

MADRID (Reuters) - Tourists from as far away as Australia and India might have to pay next year to throw tomatoes at each other at Spain's famous La Tomatina festival.

The eastern Spanish town of Bunol -- where the streets fill with red sludge at the annual bash -- is studying an entry fee of 5 euros (4 pounds) to limit attendance and improve safety, a town official said on Thursday.

The August festival attracts up to 50,000 revellers in minimal clothing who pelt each other with tonnes of tomatoes in Bunol, population 10,000. But local authorities would like to cut the number to half by charging visitors.

Town councillor Rafael Perez denied the plan to charge visitors to throw tomatoes at one other has to do with Spain's deep economic crisis, even though the cash-strapped regional Valencia government owes Bunol 3 million euros.

"This idea came up for security reasons. It's a miracle we haven't had any serious accidents," Perez told Reuters.

"If it was just about money we would charge more."

Spain is at the heart of the euro zone debt crisis on concerns the government can't control its finances and those of its highly indebted regions, and public administrations have had to apply drastic austerity measures in social services such as health and education.

"This is one of the most popular festivals in Spain and we don't get any aid, it's all on us," Perez said. Bunol's total annual budget is 7.5 million euros.

The town councillor said private tour operators make money selling travel packages of up to 300 euros to take people to the festival, without paying any fees to the town.

The enormous food fight began accidentally in 1945, when a group of young men were excluded from summer celebrations and protested by throwing tomatoes from a street stall.

The protest continued illegally every year until the town council accepted it as a festival in itself in 1957, and it became famous internationally after the 1990s.

The town council will make a decision about the new fees in November, after studying safety reports.

Dish Loses 10,000 Subscribers | The Online Reporter

- Lost AMC but Expects Programming Costs to Decline
? Looking for Partner with Synergy for Its Mobile TV Service

The US satco Dish Network lost 10,000 pay TV subscribers in
the second quarter.

Dish ended its contract with AMC Networks, maker of hits such
as ?Mad Men? and ?Breaking Bad,? on July 1 because many of
AMC?s original shows are available on OTT services such as
iTunes for rent or purchase the day following their debut. CEO
Charlie Ergen said the loss of AMC would be beneficial to Dish
because the company?s programming costs will drop slightly.

?We could pay for every customer who would watch ?Mad Men.? We
could pay for entire iTunes bills and that would be cheaper
than burdening our customers if you don?t watch those channels
with that cost,? Ergen said. ?Long term, we?re going to be
several dollars less than our competitors because we don?t
carry those channels.?

Dish?s ad campaign to promote its Hopper whole-home DVR caused
the company?s subscriber acquisition costs to increase to $806
per new subscriber, up from $795 a year ago.

Waiting for Mobile Video Spectrum & Looking for a Wireless
Partner
Dish is waiting for the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) to approve use of some of its wireless spectrum for
mobile TV. The company said it ?expects a favorable resolution
in the next few months.? Ergen said it would likely enter the
wireless TV market with a partner ?where there is synergy? and
that has a wireless network.

The first company that comes to mind for partnering with for a
mobile TV service is AT&T, the US? second largest cellco, but
whose U-Verse pay TV service is constrained to where its
existing telephone network is located. AT&T, which came close
to acquiring satco DirecTV a number of years ago, might want
to keep up with Verizon and spread its pay TV network
nationwide. Verizon has partnered with Redbox owner Coinstar
to cook up a US-wide combination OTT and DVD rental service
that could include live shows being delivered to mobile
devices. After all, Verizon Wireless is the US? largest cellco
in number of mobile devices that connect to its network.

Dish and Qualcomm are working together to add satellite
communications to some versions of Qualcomm?s Snapdragon S4
application processors. Devices such as smartphones and
tablets that have the chips could connect to both satellite
and ground-based mobile networks and receive mobile TV
signals.

Dish has asked the FCC to change the rules so it could use its
satellite spectrum for mobile TV.

Dish to Stream Shows to iOS and Android Devices
Dish is very much in tune with the wireless TV market. It is
rolling out an in-house mobile app that uses its Slingbox-
capable ViP922 DVR. Users of the $30 app can currently control
the DVR and see the program guide from iOS and Android
devices. Dish intends to add free live TV and DVR recordings
this fall that will stream to the devices with the app. The
Associated Press reported that the service will be free,
except for the cost of the DVRs or broadband connected Dish
STBs that are connected to its Slingbox units.

Matt Barkley has slipped back into the pack and Montee Ball has fallen off the board completely. Landry Jones? You can probably take him off the list, too. Same with Tyler Wilson.

All the preseason hype is pretty much out the window. The Heisman Trophy race starts now and it's about results, not hype.

Barkley could still climb back into the race, he's got the talent and the platform (games against Oregon and Notre Dame) to do so. Here are six players he'll be competing with from here on out (in no particular order).

___

EJ MANUEL, qb, Florida State ? One of the main requirements of any Heisman winner is to have a big game in at least one of your biggest games. Manuel has already checked that box, carving up Clemson for 380 yards passing and 102 rushing. The Tigers' defense won't be mistaken for Alabama's, but Manuel came through when his team was in a hole and that counts for something, too. The Seminoles will be big favorites against the rest of the ACC, which means one misstep could be too many for Manuel's Heisman campaign. Key games: at Virginia Tech, Nov. 8; vs. Florida, Nov. 24.

___

GENO SMITH, qb, West Virginia ? His numbers are already off the charts. In three games, he has 1,072 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Mountaineers begin Big 12 play this week against Baylor, so expect the big numbers to continue piling up. In fact, the Big 12 should provide plenty of opportunities for Smith to put up flashy stats. Key games: at Texas, Oct. 6; vs. Oklahoma, Nov. 17.

___

MANTI TE'O, lb, Notre Dame ? A linebacker for Heisman? It's never happened before, but Te'o has been spectacular the last two weeks on national television, while dealing with personal tragedy. And he plays for Notre Dame, which doesn't hurt. If the Fighting Irish can stay unbeaten, it'll be on their defense. Te'o is the face of that defense ? and its heart and soul. Key games: vs. Stanford, Oct. 13; at Oklahoma, Oct. 27; at USC, Nov. 24.

___

JARVIS JONES, lb, Georgia ? If Te'o makes the list, no reason for Jones not to. He was thoroughly dominant against Missouri and as a pass rusher he'll have be able to toss around those sack stats, which are far more appealing than plain old tackles. The All-American has 4.5 sacks in three games. Key games: at South Carolina, Oct. 6; vs. Florida, Oct. 27.

____

AJ McCARRON, qb, Alabama ? McCarron won't be able to compete with guys like Manuel and Smith when it comes to sheer numbers, though the fourth-best passer rating in the country and 10 touchdown passes through four games is nothing to scoff at. Alabama's offense isn't built that way and the Tide look so good right now, who knows how many more fourth quarters McCarron will spend mostly watching from the sideline. Still, he's more than just a game-manager. Key games: at LSU, Nov. 3; possibly the SEC championship, Dec. 1.

___

COLLIN KLEIN, qb, Kansas State ? His passes aren't pretty and his runs aren't flashy, but Optimus Klein is really tough to stop. A humble but tenacious wrecking-ball of a quarterback, he's got just enough Tebow in him to make him a voter favorite. Key games: at West Virginia, Oct. 20; vs. Texas, Dec. 1.

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) ? For the older ? OK, squarer ? side of the generation gap, Andy Williams was part of the soundtrack of the 1960s and '70s, with easy-listening hits like "Moon River," the "Love Story" theme and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from his beloved Christmas TV specials.

The singer known for his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," Williams once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred ? not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."

The 84-year-old entertainer, who died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with bladder cancer, outlasted many of the decade's rock stars and fellow crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s and continued to perform into his 80s.

Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records, three platinum and five Grammy award nominations.

Williams was also the first host of the live Grammy awards telecast and hosted the show for seven consecutive years, beginning in 1971.

Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the cherished 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.

"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."

At a Wednesday matinee at Williams' Moon River Theatre in Branson, a performer told the crowd that Williams would have wanted the show to go on, and it did. The first show after his death included a moving video of him performing "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."

"It was very emotional, very sad," said Barbara Cox of Atlanta, who came to Branson on vacation. "We've lost a great man."

Because of illness, Williams had not performed in several months.

He had been a constant presence on television with "The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971. It won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering with guest stars.

It was on that show that Williams ? who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet ? introduced the world to another clean-cut act ? the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.

Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.

For many families, Williams and his music were a holiday tradition. His annual Christmas specials continued long after his show ended, featuring Williams dressed in colorful sweaters singing favorites that almost always included "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," a song written for Williams that became a holiday standard.

Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.

"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines."

His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude.

In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said the slaying was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.

Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.

He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927, and began performing with older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.

When Andy was 8, Williams' father arranged for the kids to have an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down but kept returning until they were finally accepted. The show attracted attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."

The brothers later worked with Kay Thompson, a singer who eventually became famous for the "Eloise" children's books. She had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas, drawing rave reviews and as much as $25,000 a week.

After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.

Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.

A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.

Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Barack Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon and in 1968 was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign.

When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.

"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice, but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."

After giving up touring, he settled in Branson, with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts, and was among the first wave of national entertainers to perform there regularly.

When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music, but Williams changed that with his classy, $13 million theater in the heart of the entertainment district, where he did two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he cut back to one show a night. His most popular time was Christmas.

Not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest. "The fact is most of my friends in LA still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.

He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, Calif., where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.

Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."

Williams is survived by his wife and his three children.

Romney, Obama descend on battleground Ohio

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday that he understands the struggles of working families and has the know-how to fix them as he sought to counteract fallout from a secret video that President Barack Obama won't let him live down.

With polls showing the president ahead in key swing states that will decide the race, the White House expressed confidence. "As time progresses, you know, the field is looking like it's narrowing for them," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One as Obama headed for his own rallies in Ohio. "And so in that sense we'd rather be us than them."

Obama was stopping at two college campuses in the hunt for the state's 18 electoral votes, while Romney was here for a second straight day on a bus emblazoned with, "More Jobs, More Take-Home Pay." Losing the state would dramatically narrow Romney's path to the 270 Electoral College votes it takes to win the White House ? and no Republican has ever lost Ohio and won the presidency.

Romney's pitch for working-class men was far from subtle. He campaigned at a factory that makes commercial spring wire, touring the noisy plant floor in goggles and rolled-up shirt sleeves alongside television's king of macho, Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs" host Mike Rowe. The pair spoke later from a stage set with hard hat-wearing workers, giant coils of steel wire, open metal cross beams and yellow caution signs in the background.

The economy during Obama's presidency has been especially hard on male blue-collar workers. But secretly recorded video of Romney telling donors he doesn't need to worry about the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay income taxes and "believe that they are victims" has distracted from his argument that blue-collar men should throw Obama out over his fiscal record.

Obama continued to remind voters of Romney's secretly recorded remarks in television ads and a speech at Bowling Green State University.

"Look, I don't believe we can get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as a bunch of victims who never take responsibility for their own lives," Obama said. "I've got to tell you, as I travel around Ohio and as I look out on this crowd, I don't see a lot of victims. I see hard working Ohioans."

At an earlier stop outside Columbus, Romney touted his business experience as reason he can do better. "I care about the people of America. The difference between me and President Obama is I know what to do and I will do what it takes to get this economy going," Romney said to a standing ovation from supporters.

Romney also released a 60-second television ad with a new, softer approach than the negative ads dominating the airways. It's unclear how much ? if at all ? the commercial will air on television, but it echoed Romney's compassionate pitch from the campaign trial. The candidate, in an open-collar shirt, speaks into the camera about the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck and trying to pay for necessities like food and gas on falling incomes.

"President Obama and I both care about poor and middle-class families," Romney says. "The difference is my policies will make things better for them."

And Romney's new insistence that he's the better candidate to help middle-class families comes after his campaign's recent announcement that he'll do more to describe what he would do as president. At his morning rally, Romney stood in front of a running national debt clock and focused on Obama's handling of the debt and the interest piling up.

Romney's comments follow a Washington Post poll that shows the federal debt and deficit are the one set of issues on which he has an advantage over Obama with likely voters. In recent weeks, Romney has lost his polling edge on the economy generally, with more people saying they now trust Obama to fix the nation's economic woes.

The gym couldn't hold all the people who came to see Romney at Alum Creek Park, and he stopped by an overflow room to shake hands with those who couldn't get in to see him in person. As he was leaving, one supporter told him: "Please get us out of this mess."

Introducing Romney was golfing great Jack Nicklaus, an Ohio native. Romney's campaign produced signs that read, "The Golden Bear for Romney/Ryan," featuring the campaign logo and a silhouette of Nicklaus swinging a club. "I certainly didn't apologize for my success," Nicklaus told the audience to cheers.

Obama planned to campaign later Wednesday at Kent State University, hoping to generate the kind of enthusiasm among young voters that helped fuel his victory four years ago. Romney focused on major metropolitan areas of the state where large numbers of voters live.

Buoyed by signs of an improving economy, Obama has the edge in polls in Ohio six weeks from Election Day. The president has led Romney in a series of recent surveys in the state, with a Washington Post poll on Tuesday showing Obama with a lead that was outside the poll's margin of error. A CBS/New York Times poll also showed Obama ahead here. Even on handling of the economy, where Romney until recently had an advantage, Obama now leads.

AP source: Dems pour $516K into Ind. Senate battle

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Senate Democrats will place a $516,000 bet next week that Rep. Joe Donnelly can beat Republican Richard Mourdock in the race for Indiana's open seat.

A party official said Friday the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is financing a new ad for Donnelly that will run statewide. The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly ahead of the ad's release and requested anonymity.

The battle for Indiana's Senate seat has been tight since the tea party-backed Mourdock defeated Sen. Richard Lugar in May's Republican primary.

Attention on the Indiana race has grown as a handful of forces have changed the seat from a safe bet for a Republican to a heated battle. Republicans need to flip four seats to win control of the Senate, and Democrats have turned the Indiana seat into an unexpected challenge with consistent spending since May.

Conservative super PACs have hit back in recent months. The group Americans for Prosperity announced last month it was spending $700,000 on ads criticizing Donnelly for supporting the federal health care law, while the anti-tax Club for Growth dropped $800,000 earlier this month against Donnelly.

In total, Democrats tracking Indiana ad spending say Mourdock and his allies will have spent $2.9 million on air by the end of next week, while Donnelly and his supporters will have blasted out $3.3 million.

Groups associated with Senate Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's American Majority super PAC, have been spending heavily in support of Donnelly.
