Dramatically Increase Productivity By ... - Business Insider

?

The best leaders have an acute understanding of their employees? temperaments. In the book "Colour Savvy," authors Susan Geary and Anne Bulstrode discuss four different?temperaments?Inquiring Green, Resourceful Orange, Organized Gold and Authentic Blue?based on a person?s needs and values.

If you?re able to identify these different temperaments in people, you can pinpoint their strengths and challenges. You will also?understand the best ways to interact and work with them.

Temperaments are different from personalities, because several temperaments can make up a personality, Geary and Bulstrode say, but everyone is born with a ?preferred way of doing things,? or a preferred temperament. Here?s how to best work with these four types:

1. Inquiring Green
Inquiring Greens include Martin Luther King, Jr. and Woody Allen

?Inquiring Greens? are constantly on an ongoing quest for knowledge, usually through facts and data.?They tend to be independent thinkers and don?t like others telling them what to do. ?They value progress and improvement ? tend not to get mired in the past or present but are oriented to the future and progression,? the authors write.

These employees make great visionary and strategic leaders and are ?especially adept at dealing with complex issues?whether it is a computer, mechanical or organizational problems.??They are primarily big picture people and can see possible pitfalls and contingencies in a situation. However, they are also prone to feeling uncomfortable in social situations and therefore may give off a cold, impatient and uncaring vibe.?

Tips for working with an Inquiring Green:

  • Present your arguments in a logical manner.

  • Show confidence.

  • Be willing to debate ideas, and be open to feedback and critiquing.?

  • Be a problem solver; come to the table with a solution.

  • Keep your cool; don?t get offended by their bluntness.

  • Don?t make small talk.

  • Don?t micromanage them.

2. Resourceful Orange
Resourceful Oranges include Ronald Reagan and Richard Branson

These people typically hate to sit still for long periods of time and usually value excitement and action more than planning. They tend to make decisions quickly and don?t like to spend too much time thinking about it. Furthermore, they prefer change and?unpredictability to a stable environment.

Resourceful Oranges are the most adaptable out of all the Temperaments and ?function optimally when they need to work on tight deadlines or juggle multiple priorities.? When problems arise, these people automatically go into action mode and don?t tend to panic. They are also great negotiators and have an easy time charming others to get them on board with their missions.

Since they are highly energetic and like to do things spontaneously, they may have a reputation as being??immature, rambunctious, noisy, disordered and careless.?

Tips for working with a Resourceful Orange:

  • Use humor when dealing with Resourceful Oranges.

  • Do not expect a micromanager.

  • Create a competitive environment, because these workers think it?s a game.

  • Tell Resourceful Oranges what you want accomplished, not how to do the job.

  • Make use of their skills in a crisis situation.

  • Make them feel part of the team.

3. Organized Gold
Organized Golds include Queen Elizabeth II and Julia Child?

These people think it?s important to be part of a community, so they work best when they feel a sense of belonging.?They prefer hierarchical structures and believe that everyone should have specific duties and responsibilities. They perform best in teams and groups. Organized Golds thrive at?planning and organizing and have an easy time identifying priorities and managing others.

As for their challenges, Organized Golds often have a difficult time remaining calm in different scenarios. They are overprotective, sometimes rigid and, often, overworked and exhausted. They prefer routine and don?t do well with change.?

Tips for working with an Organized Gold:?

  • Present your ideas in a systematic way.

  • Be punctual.

  • Be prepared and open to criticism.

  • Be a team player.

  • Give these people a sense of belonging.

  • Fill them in on the details of a task.

4. Authentic Blue
Authentic Blues include Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Carter

These people are always trying to find meaning and significance in their personal and professional lives.?Out of all the temperaments, Authentic Blues are the best at communicating with others and ?can be gifted in the use of stories, analogies and metaphors.? However, since they are so in tune with their feelings and everyone else?s feelings, these people are often hypersensitive to criticism and conflict and are ?overly helpful.?

Tips for working with an Authentic Blue:

  • Focus on the future, not the past.

  • Make use of stories, metaphors and analogies when explaining yourself.?

  • Use personal examples to make your point.?

  • Listen to them when they are not satisfied with something.

  • When presenting new ideas or tasks, start with the big picture and then drill down to the detail if necessary.

NJ governor Christie announces takeover of struggling Camden schools

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

Saying it was time to "hit the reset button" on the Camden School District, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Monday announced a planned takeover of the 26 schools that rank among the state's worst performers in graduation and academic proficiency. ?

"Today we are taking the lead because for too long, the public school system in Camden has failed its children," Christie said at press conference on Monday.

"The?situation?I believe is dire now and so far gone that we are at a breaking point."

Camden schools graduation rate was below 50 percent in 2012, 37 points below the state average, according to statistics released by the governor's office.

The schools also drastically?under performed?against the state average in?standardized?testing in math and English. An evaluation by the state Department of Education ultimately led Christie, a Republican, to the conclusion that the school district could not fix its deep-rooted problems without help from the state.

"I believe that there are so many people in Camden who will look at this as an opportunity to hit the reset button. To restart and put aside some of the failings of the past," said Christie.?

Camden will become the fourth school district to fall under New Jersey control, but the first to be taken over during Christie's administration. The last time the state took control of a New Jersey school district was 1995.

The governor said he did not make the decision lightly, having waited more than three years to see if school performance would improve.

Christie was joined by New Jersey Education?Education Commissioner Chris Cerf and local leaders during his announcement held in a library of Camden high school. The governor thanked local educators, parents and community leaders for their cooperation, while pledging to work with them through the implementation of proposal.

If the takeover is approved, a state-appointed superintendent and leadership team would take control of the district after a nationwide search. The state government would also have oversight of teacher selection, classroom curriculum, school books and?resources.

Christie said it will likely take until next school year for the program to be fully implemented.

The governor's office did, however, also announce immediate actions to be taken, which includes dispatching a transitional leadership team that will begin a review of district practices.?

Camden, which sits across the?Delaware?River from Philadelphia, has long been plagued by a school system?fraught?with low test scores as well as poverty.

"The problems are now incapable of fixing themselves and beyond the capacity of the current system to be able to do it on its own. So we do this today to try to change Camden," said Christie.?

Energy boom begins to ripple through US economy

The boom in new oil and natural gas flowing through U.S. pipelines is beginning to ripple through the wider American economy.

Just ask Edrick Smith.

In September, Smith traded temp agency jobs for full-time employment with Baltimore-based Marlin Steel Wire Products, which makes wire baskets for industrial customers. An experienced machinist, Smith is now expanding his skills by learning to set up and operate factory robots.

?Knowing each and every machine in here gives me an opportunity to make good money, and to educate myself more,? he said. ?This is my career.?

Smith?s hiring was just one of thousands of openings created indirectly by a new boom in domestic oil and natural gas drilling ? a bounty so rich that it has even caught energy industry insiders by surprise. In part 2 of our four-part ?Power Shift? special report, we examine how the explosion in drilling in places like North Dakota and West Texas is spreading through the general economy ? despite controversy over the potential environmental impact of the new industry practices.

Marlin Steel Wire, for example, has expanded its payroll and invested in high-tech equipment to keep up with a steady pick-up in orders from other U.S. manufacturers. Orders are rising, said owner Drew Greenblatt, because his customers are receiving a widening discount in the price of natural gas and electricity.

?That?s making U.S. companies that used to be at a price disadvantage now uniquely positioned to win contracts they never won in the past -- or haven?t for a while,? he said. ?Everyone talks about what?s going on in North Dakota, but it?s filtering down now to conventional factories throughout America."

Some analysts believe the energy cost savings for businesses, factories and consumers will last for decades.

?This is not going to be a one- or two-year thing,? said Ross Eisenberg, head of energy and resources policy at the National Association of Manufacturers. ?We?re going to see lower natural gas prices for a long, long way into the future.?

Booms, busts and booms
Since the first gusher of oil spewed from of the ground above the Spindletop salt dome outside Beaumont, Texas, more than a century ago, the U.S. energy industry has enjoyed its share of booms and busts. After peaking in the early 1970s, U.S. oil and gas production began to decline as thousands of depleted wells were shut down. The U.S. rapidly became dependent on foreign suppliers to fuel its economy.

About a decade ago, advanced oilfield production technologies like hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," and horizontal drilling began to reverse that trend. Many of the now-bountiful fields being brought back on line were mothballed long ago when the remaining ?tight? oil and gas deposits were considered too costly or technically difficult to produce.

?It is a sizeable opportunity,? said John Larson, an economist with IHS Global Insight. ?It?s a game changer.?

Interactive map: Where US energy is produced

The economics of production have also played a role in the boom. A tripling in the market price of a barrel of crude over the past decade supports widespread use of costly extraction methods that didn't make sense when energy prices were lower.

Barring an unanticipated setback, so-called ?unconventional? oil and gas production is expected to continue to grow over the next two decades. Over that period, the industry is expected to make more than $5 trillion in new capital investment that will support more than 3.5 million jobs by 2035, according to the financial analysis firm IHS Global Insight.

That economic impact of such spending already is spreading, especially to companies that rely heavily on natural gas as a raw material or energy source and investing and hiring.

Steel makers, for example, benefit from both the lower cost of manufacturing and from strong demand for steel pipe used for oil and gas drilling. Companies in the steel rustbelt of Pennsylvania and Ohio are polishing up aging plants to replace coal with cheaper natural gas. Others are setting up shop closer to major gas distribution hubs like Louisiana, where steel giant Nucor is investing $750 million to fire up a new plant later this year.

Chemical, plastics and fertilizer makers, who rely on natural gas both as a raw material and an energy source, have also been expanding production. Last year, Dow Chemical announced a $4 billion investment in facilities, part of some $15 billion in expansion plans announced by Gulf Coast chemical makers. And Vancouver-based Methanex Corp. decided last year to spend $425 million to disassemble an idled methanol plant in Chile and move it lock, stock and pipeline to Louisiana.

In December, economists with UBS bank tallied some $65 billion in announced construction of new plants related to cheaper natural gas, and said another 11 plants had been announced worth billions more.

As groundbreaking on these projects gets under way, the dividends from the energy boom will flow even further ? to construction companies, engineering firms, materials and equipment suppliers and lenders who help finance the projects.

That, in turn, will help shore up state and federal budgets. The added revenue ? from income taxes on new jobs created, corporate taxes on added oil and gas profits and state and federal royalty payments ? could top $2.5 trillion through 2035, according to IHS Global Insight.

Though prices at the gas pump have remained stubbornly high -- primarily because stepped-up U.S. production makes up relatively small percentage of the global supply, which drives oil prices -- American households are also getting a big break on the lower cost of natural gas and electricity. Larson, the IHS economist, estimated that the energy ?dividend? amounts to about $1,000 a year per household and will double by 2035.

?It?s a fairly substantial return of wealth to the American consumer," he said.

Increased U.S. oil and natural gas production also promises to help rebalance the long-running trade gaps that have weakened the dollar. If the U.S. moves from a net importer to a net exporter of energy over the next decade, as some experts project, oil will flip from being a source of trade deficits to an important contributor on the positive side of the ledger. With China?s energy-hungry economy expected to continue to rely on imported oil, some analysts believe Beijing may soon begin swapping its huge pile of U.S. Treasury bonds for barrels of West Texas crude.

Slideshow: Drilling down and out in Texas

America?s growing energy independence also has been fueled by gains in efficiency: U.S. vehicles are squeezing more mileage from every gallon of fuel, and high-tech heating and cooling units and green building techniques and materials have cut energy bills for commercial and residential buildings by 10 percent since 2005.

Challenges remain
To be sure, there are forces that could delay ? or even derail ? the ongoing energy boom. The drop in natural gas prices has already slowed production of some projects that become too costly when gas prices are too low.

Lower oil prices could have the same impact, but it?s not clear that added U.S. supplies will be sufficient to make a dent in global oil prices, especially if OPEC producers like Saudi Arabia throttle back on supplies to maintain current prices.

But some experts are more bullish on the prospects for a second energy windfall as increased U.S. supplies of oil rein in global prices. Citibank analyst Edward Morse thinks that by the end of the decade, added U.S. output will pull global crude prices back down to a range of $70 to $90 a barrel ? a savings of as much as 30 percent.

That kind of price drop would further amplify the economic boost from lower natural gas prices already flowing through the economy.

Last year, for example, the U.S. consumed roughly 7 billion barrels of oil at an average price of about $100 a barrel. A 30 percent discount on that oil bill works out to about 1.3 percent of gross domestic product. In an economy growing at roughly 2 percent a year, the impact of that dividend would be substantial.

Other factors could slow development. Widespread environmental concerns about the impact of hydraulic fracturing on water supplies have delayed drilling of the Marcellus shale field in New York, where the state Assembly recently voted to extend a moratorium for another two years. In California, the state Legislature is considering at least eight bills to regulate expanded production in the Monterey shale field, estimated to be one of the largest deposits in the country.

Oil and gas producers also face a looming labor shortage as a generation of petroleum engineers and geologists approach retirement age. Their departure is compounded by a dearth of trained younger workers to take their places. From a peak of 11,000 students enrolled in geology and petroleum engineering programs at 34 universities in 1983, only 1,500 were enrolled in 17 programs by 2004, according to a 2007 report from the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.

Finally, transportation bottlenecks have already slowed the distribution of new energy supplies and could further slow future expansion. Expanding the existing pipeline network, which was planned and constructed decades ago, long before new drilling techniques rewrote the U.S. energy map, is already raising safety and environmental concerns.

Complete coverage: Power Shift: America's drive for energy independence

The most visible controversy ? construction of the proposed $7 billion Keystone pipeline through the nation?s heartland ? could be the opening round of ongoing local battles over the build-out of the network required to get new supplies of oil and natural gas from producer to consumer.

?We imported natural gas this winter to the Northeast because we don?t have the capacity yet to move the gas where we need it,? said Larson. ?As a country, we need to address the issue of how we develop the infrastructure we need to enable this energy to flow to where it?s needed.?

Classic Retweet Adds Old Retweeting Option to Twitter's Web Interface

Classic Retweet Adds Old Retweeting Option to Twitter's Web Interface Chrome: If you want to add some commentary to someone else's Tweet, Classic Retweet for Chrome adds the option for an old-style retweet option to Twitter's web interface.

The extension adds a "Classic Retweet" button next to Twitter's standard retweet button in your timeline. Clicking it brings up a new tweet window with "RT," the user, and the tweet already filled in, allowing you to add your commentary or make edits. It's a simple concept, but it can save you a few seconds of copy and pasting. A lot of Twitter clients have this feature built in, but with Twitter shutting them down left and right, it's nice to have the option on the web interface.

U.S. Senate narrowly passes first budget in four years

By David Lawder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate on Saturday narrowly passed its first federal budget in four years, a move that will usher in a relative lull in Washington's fiscal wars until an anticipated summer showdown over raising the debt ceiling.

The budget plan passed 50-49 at about 5 a.m. after a marathon voting session in the Democratic-controlled chamber. Four Democratic senators facing tough re-election campaigns in 2014 joined all the Senate Republicans in opposing the measure, which seeks to raise nearly $1 trillion in new tax revenues by closing some tax breaks for the wealthy.

The Senate budget, which reflects Democratic priorities of boosting near-term job growth and preserving social safety net programs, will square off in coming months against a Republican-focused budget passed by the Republican-dominated House of Representatives.

Neither of the non-binding blueprints has a chance of passage in the opposing chamber, leaving Congress no closer to resolving deep differences over how to shrink U.S. deficits and grow the economy. But they give each party a platform from which to tout their respective fiscal visions.

The Democrats' plan from Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray aims to reduce deficits by $1.85 trillion over 10 years through an equal mix of tax increases and spending cuts.

The Republican plan from House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan seeks $4.6 trillion in savings over the same period without raising new taxes. It aims to reach a small surplus by 2023 through deep cuts to healthcare and social programs that aid the elderly and poor.

Murray said after the vote that she would try to work with Ryan on a path toward compromise.

"While it is clear that the policies, values, and priorities of the Senate budget are very different than those articulated in the House budget, I know the American people are expecting us to work together to end the gridlock and find common ground, and I plan to continue doing exactly that."

SHUTDOWN THREAT

The White House welcomed the Senate move. "Today, the Senate passed a budget plan that will create jobs and cut the deficit in a balanced way," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

"Now it is time for our leaders to come together to find common ground. The president has put a plan on the table that reflects compromise, and he will continue to work with both sides to see if there is an opportunity to reach a solution to our budget challenges," he said in a statement.

Passage of a stop-gap government funding measure on Thursday lowered the temperature in the budget debate by eliminating the threat of a government shutdown next week.

"We're going to get a breather here. Congress will let things cool off a bit and there'll be other issues that come to the forefront in the spring," said Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at Potomac Research Group, a firm that advises institutional investors on Washington politics.

These issues include legislation on gun control, immigration reform and initial work on simplifying the tax code, which is particularly important to Republicans.

Joining Republicans in opposing the Democratic budget were Democratic senators from conservative-leaning states: Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Voting for a budget that raises tax revenues could increase their vulnerability in congressional elections next year and put Democrats' thin majority at risk.

In the lead-up to the Senate vote early on Saturday morning, the body considered more than 100 largely symbolic, non-binding amendments to the budget aimed at scoring political points and staking out positions.

Among notable amendments, the Senate signaled strong support for allowing states more authority to collect sales taxes on Internet purchases, for approval of the controversial Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline and for repealing a tax on medical devices imposed by President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law.

The Senate also voted 99-0 to end policies that subsidized large banks considered "too big to fail," but came out against imposing taxes on industrial carbon emissions.

Ryan's plan aims to reach a small surplus with no tax increases by 2023 through deep cuts to social safety net programs. This enables Republicans to claim that they are more responsible by balancing the budget.

"The House budget changes our debt course, while the Senate budget does not," said Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.

BATTLE OVER 'BALANCE'

In a taste of the ideological debates to come, Murray claimed that the Senate budget was more "balanced" because it emphasized job growth and offered an equal amount of revenue increases and spending cuts.

The Senate had not passed a budget resolution since 2009 because of fiscal policy disputes with House Republicans that forced Congress to turn to numerous stop-gap spending measures to avoid government shutdowns.

To protect their thin Senate majority, Democrats avoided exposing their members to potentially damaging votes to raise taxes ahead of 2012 elections, arguing that a 2011 budget deal set spending levels for several years and made the non-binding budget legislation unnecessary.

But this year, under the February debt limit increase law, members of both the House and Senate faced pay suspensions if their chamber had failed to pass a budget by April 15.

Although lawmakers in both parties have called for a return to normal budgeting procedures after years of stop-gap spending bills and high-pressure deadlines, there is little chance that they can work out differences between the two budgets.

"The idea of conferencing them is kind of a joke. You would expect that if there were a chance of success, they wouldn't have planted flags on completely different planets," said Sean West, U.S. policy director at Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy.

Ultimately, it may take another 11th-hour deal between Obama and congressional Republicans to set a fiscal path forward as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling, he said. The Treasury is expected to exhaust its borrowing capacity around late July or early August.

In 2011, a similar fight over the debt limit shook financial markets and cost the United States its top-tier credit rating.

Self Improvement | Exercise Addiction: The Never-Ending Treadmill ...

treadmillBy Matt Keck

We all know the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. But as the old adage reminds us, there can be too much of a good thing. Especially at a time when even our government has declared ?war on obesity?, the pressure to exercise has become even more intense. Yet exercise addiction can have more acute health consequences than obesity, and is less likely to be identified or questioned by others. In fact, over-exercisers often receive praise and awe for the limits to which they are able to push their bodies. So, how does one know when exercise has gone beyond an activity to maintain health and has become an unhealthy addiction?

Below are some signs that exercisers can lookout for that indicate exercise has run away with them:

* Exercise has an inflated value in your life. The person chooses exercise over things like family, friends or relationships. An example of this would be a parent who chooses to exercise during their child?s sporting events instead of supporting the child.

* When exercise is unavailable, mood changes occur. The person obsesses over a missed workout, or becomes angry when the exercise routine becomes altered, if even for a day. When exercise becomes rigid and punitive, it has stopped being a positive influence.

* Exercising despite having injury or pain. The person does not allow their body time to heal, or they exercise to the point that weight drops below medically safe levels.

* Quantities of exercise become unreasonable. The person may spend hours a day exercising, or may exercise multiple times a day. They may begin to hide exercise from others who disapprove, and deny or lie about the amount of exercise.

These are all indicators that exercise addiction may be present. Some of these may be grey areas for elite athletes, who rely on their body to perform above most accepted standards. However, even elite athletes will not train when injured, and will take appropriate care of their bodies. Elite athletes cannot perform successfully if they are underweight or if their emotional well-being is jeopardized by their athletic activity. The same is true for exercisers of all levels. Remember that exercise is meant to feel good and to make your body feel good. When it begins to have the opposite effect, the role of exercise in your life has to be re-evaluated.

Get off the never-ending treadmill and aim at a balanced and healthy life-style.

Could North Korean missiles really hit US military bases? (+video)

North Korea threatened Thursday to fire missiles at US bases in the Pacific region in retaliation for US-South Korea joint exercises. While some targets are within range, Pyongyang's longer-range capabilities are unclear.

North Korea on Thursday threatened to hit US military bases in the Pacific region with missiles in retaliation for ongoing US-South Korea military training missions.

Could North Korea hit US military bases in the Pacific region with missiles? The question arises because Pyongyang on Thursday threatened to do just that in retaliation for ongoing US-South Korea military training missions.

North Korea appears particularly unhappy about the participation of nuclear-capable B-52 bombers in these exercises. Washington dispatched these aircraft at a time of tension in the region to emphasize that the US remains committed to South Korea?s defense.

?The US should not forget that the Anderson Air Force Base on Guam, where B-52s take off, and naval bases in Japan proper and Okinawa, where nuclear-powered submarines are launched, are within the striking range of [North Korea?s] precision strike means,? a North Korean military spokesman told the KCNA state-run news service.

Is this within the realm of the possible? The short answer is ?yes.? The longer answer is ?yes, probably, they could try, but we?re not sure they could actually hit those targets, or with what, and they would be very foolish to attempt it.?

First, let?s look at the distances. Japan, home to about 38,000 US military personnel, is only about 650 miles from North Korea ? not a very long flight. Guam, an island south of Japan and east of the Philippines, is much father at about 2,100 miles distance. (There are also upwards of 28,000 US servicemen and women based in South Korea itself.)

Japan is clearly within range of North Korean missile forces. Pyongyang?s medium-range Nodong 1, a single-stage liquid-propelled weapon based on Soviet ?Scud? technology, could reach targets across the Japanese archipelago, according to an International Institute for Strategic Studies overview of North Korea?s missile program.

But the Nodong is not exactly a ?precision strike? instrument, according to US analysts. It?s accurate only to within about two or three miles. Given its relatively small payload and the limited number North Korea has at its disposal, ?the Nodong is probably more a political weapon than an effective military instrument,? the IISS concludes.

At 2,100 miles distance, Guam would be an even tougher target. It?s outside the range of Nodongs, but might be targeted by North Korea?s multi-stage intermediate range ballistic missile, the Taepodong, which has a 2,000-plus-mile range.

But as a 2012 Congressional Research Service study of Guam?s military defense notes, ?there has been a question about whether North Korea deployed this IRBM.?

The Taepodong has been flight tested but once, and failed. South Korea in 2008 said the North had indeed deployed the weapon, but since then Pyongyang has shown yet another alleged medium-range missile, the Musudan, in a military parade.

?Presumably, Pyongyang has built or could assemble additional [Taepodong] missiles for firing on fairly short notice,? the IISS concludes.

Then there is North Korea?s long-range missile program. The Unha-3, to throw even more confusing designations into the mix, is a multi-stage rocket the North Koreans used to launch a satellite into space last December.

In theory, a ballistic missile based on the Unha would be able to deliver a nuclear warhead-sized payload as far as Alaska, Hawaii, or part of the lower 48 US states, according to an analysis from the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California.

So there you have it. North Korea?s missile forces are either short-range, or little-tested, and even possibly non-existent. They could not do extensive damage unless tipped with nuclear warheads ? and US intelligence believes Pyongyang does not have the ability to make miniature nukes. Yet.

And that?s the real problem. North Korea remains committed to improving its nuclear device capability and developing missiles that can threaten the rest of the world. It is already what the US and Israel worry Iran would like to become.

That?s why Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel last week announced that in a time of fiscal austerity the US will devote $1 billion to adding 14 ground-based interceptors to US missile defenses based in Alaska.

At a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday a member of Congress asked Gen. Charles Jacoby, commander of US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, whether he has been surprised by the fast development pace of the North Korean threat.

?I wouldn?t characterize it as being surprised,? said Gen. Jacoby. ?I think that North Korea proceeded at a pace faster than we anticipated.?

Misregulated genes may have big autism role

Mar. 21, 2013 ? A new study finds that two genes individually associated with rare autism-related disorders are also jointly linked to more general forms of autism. The finding suggests a new genetic pathway to investigate in general autism research.

The genes encode the proteins NHE6 and NHE9, which are responsible for biochemical exchanges in the endosomes of cells. Mutations in the NHE6 gene are a direct cause of Christianson Syndrome, while mutations in the NHE9 gene lead to a severe form of autism with epilepsy. In the new study, a statistical analysis published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, Brown University researchers and their colleagues found a specific pattern of misregulation of those two genes -- NHE9 is up-regulated and NHE6 is down-regulated -- in the brains of children with autism compared to the brains of non-autistic children.

"These genes play a role, not just in the rare forms of autism but also in the generalized pathology of autism," said Dr. Eric Morrow, professor of biology and professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University, the paper's senior author. "In autism I think people get overwhelmed because there are hundreds of different genes. One of the important things is to find points of convergence where there are events that might be common across different forms."

The new study suggests that misregulation of NHE6 and NHE9 is one such event.

The research is based on a statistical analysis of messenger RNA samples from a bank of brain tissue donated posthumously by some children who had autism and some who did not. Messenger RNA is a key molecular player in the process of gene expression, making it an indicator of how gene expression was regulated in the cerebral cortex of each of the children.

Guided by Morrow, who studies autism genomics and sees autism patients at the E.P. Bradley Hospital in East Providence, lead author Matthew Schewede spent the summer of 2012 poring over the raw data, which was made available from a 2011 study led by co-author Daniel Geschwind and Irinia Voineagu of the University of California-Los Angeles.

Schwede, who studied statistics as an undergraduate at Harvard, is now a second-year student in the Warren Alpert Medical School. His classes are a block away from Morrow's lab, making the collaboration easy.

"We kind of stumbled on this," Schwede said. "At first we were just identifying what was up- and down-regulated in autism cerebral cortex in this data set."

But Schwede's findings about the NHE genes caught Morrow's attention in particular, because Morrow has been studying the NHE6 and NHE9 genes and the rare autism forms they cause.

"When we realized that some genes of interest for our lab were altered in the cerebral cortex, we focused the analysis on these genes in particular and how they were related to other processes," Schwede said.

Schwede made a second key finding: a strong and significant correlation between the misregulation of the NHE genes and the down-regulation of synapse genes, which is known to occur in autism.

Schwede's purely statistical analysis does not explain the physiology of how up-regulation of NHE9 and down-regulation NHE6 would affect synapse formation or general autism, but Morrow's biology group has a clear next step: to observe the neural and behavioral effects in the lab of misregulation of those genes in various experimental systems.

"That's a hypothesis that we can take to the mouse," Morrow said. "When we knock out these genes, how do the synapses change?"

The statistical results point out the value of studying rare forms of autism, not only for the sake the patients who have those conditions, Morrow said, but also because doing so can inform research about other forms of autism.

"We argue that it's relevant but sometimes, in fairness, we wonder about that," Morrow said. "A study like this really conveys strongly that that's a fair argument."

In addition Schwede, Morrow, and Geschwind, other authors are Krassimira Garbett and Karoly Mirnics of Vanderbilt University.

This grant was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Simons Foundation for Autism Research Initiative, and the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation. Schwede was funded by a summer research assistantship from the Alpert Medical School.

Passover Recipes 2013: All The Matzo, Charoset And Gefilte Fish You Need (PHOTOS)

Passover is on its way, and if you've ever planned a Seder before, you know you're in for some decision-making. Every family celebrates Passover a little bit differently, but the common theme tends to be: far too much food for the average dining table to support. We love to treat Passover as a sort of springtime Thanksgiving, including treats from the new season (rhubarb, spring onions, etc.) and plenty of leftovers to carry us through the next week.

Leavened bread is out for the week of spring that Passover occupies, which tends to make both breakfast and dessert unusually tricky. We've pulled together some of our favorite Passover recipes for both the Seder and the week to come. Are we breaking new ground, smashing tradition and starting all over again? Not entirely. These are just the kinds of things we love to eat -- some nostalgic and traditional, some a little more modern.

Kyocera DuraPro (U.S. Cellular)

The Kyocera DuraPro is U.S. Cellular's toughest cell phone. It won't break if you drop it?even in the pool. It offers good sound quality for voice calls, a very loud speaker, and decent battery life. But a dated interface and few features means it's only an average phone otherwise, and at $149.99, it's a little pricey for what you get. The DuraPro is worth a look if you need something durable, but if you want any other features, you can do better.

Design, Call Quality, and Direct Connect
Like most of the rugged phones we've tested, the DuraPro is built like a brick. It measures 4 by 2.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) when closed, and is covered in a grippy, scratch-resistant, rubberized casing. It fit into my hand comfortably when flipped open, but felt a little too chunky in my pocket. The headphone jack on the right and power port on the left are both covered with attached rubber stoppers. There's even a latch on the back cover to make sure it stays locked in place.

The DuraPro meets military specification 810G, so it's resistant to dust, extreme temperatures, humidity, low pressure, rain, salt fog, shock, solar radiation, and vibration, among other rough conditions. It will even survive in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes. To test it, I dropped the phone on several different surfaces?from the rubberized floor of the PCMag Labs to the concrete street outside?from a height of five feet. The phone managed to flip itself open a couple of times, but didn't sustain any damage. I then placed it in a pitcher of water for 30 minutes, where it was still able to receive calls and snap photos.

On the face of the phone there's a 1-inch, monochrome 96-by-64-pixel external display that shows the battery life, missed alerts, reception, and time. Inside, the 2-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD looks sharp, though the color scheme is bland and depressing. The default font size is rather small, but you can make it larger. The phone's keypad, on the other hand, is excellent; the keys are large, raised, and backlit. There's plenty of space between each key, which should make it possible to dial while wearing gloves.

The DuraPro is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi.?In New York where I tested it, U.S. Cellular phones use Sprint's network. Reception is average and voice quality is quite good. The earpiece gets very loud, and voices sound clear, though a little thin. The speakerphone isn't deafening, but I was able to hear it loud and clear over the construction going on outside of the PCMag office. Calls made with the phone also sound natural, with good noise cancellation. Calls were fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset, and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked without a problem. Battery life was solid at 8 hours and 22 minutes of talk time.

Interface and Apps
If you're looking for lots of apps and features, you're not going to find them here. The Kyocera DuraPro is a rather bare bones feature phone. As mentioned above, the key word to describe the user interface is drab. From the faded teal color on the home screen, to the black-and-white everywhere else, the DuraPro just looks shabby and dated.

The main menu features a grid with 12 icons. It links to all of your basic settings and functions, from activating Bluetooth, to call history, contacts, settings, and tools. It's dated, and requires many button presses to perform even the simplest tasks.

As far as apps go, you get the standards like an alarm, calculator, calendar, stopwatch, and world clock. You can also record voice memos. To browse the Web, there's an Access NetFront 4.1 browser for reading WAP pages; desktop HTML is out. The phone also comes with a voice-enabled GPS courtesy of Navteq's Your Navigator app.

Multimedia and Conclusions
You get 64MB of free internal memory, as well as a free microSD slot underneath the battery. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine, but you probably won't need anything that large, since media support is virtually nonexistent. The phone has a nonstandard 2.5mm headphone jack, but comes with a converter to connect a pair of 3.5mm earbuds. Either way, the phone wouldn't recognize any of my music files. I was able to play MPEG4 video files, at a tiny, blurry maximum resolution of 320-by-240-pixels.

The DuraPro's 3.2-megapixel camera has an LED flash, but no autofocus. It snaps photos quickly, in about half a second, but then takes a good 2 seconds to save them. Test photos look decent, with acceptable color and detail, though they're a little dark overall. The camera also records video, but it's terrible. Video files max out at a minuscule 176-by-144-pixels and play back at a stuttering 10 frames per second indoors and 15 frames per second outside.

Features aside, the Kyocera DuraPro is as rugged as phones come on U.S. Cellular. If you're looking for something very basic to make occasional voice calls, and you need durability, it'll work perfectly. But if you're more interesting in texting and other features, you're better off with a phone like the $40 Samsung Character. It's a lot less expensive, has a roomy slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and doubles as a decent music player. Just make sure not to drop it, keep it away from the pool, and you're good to go.

Gun rights backers vow court fight against new Colorado laws

By Keith Coffman

DENVER (Reuters) - Only a day after Colorado's governor signed laws setting limits on ammunition and imposing background checks, gun rights advocates have vowed to sue, some county sheriffs have declined to enforce the measures, and an ammunition manufacturer is leaving the state.

The measures signed into law on Wednesday by Governor John Hickenlooper will ban ammunition magazines with more than 15 rounds, require universal background checks for gun buyers and force gun buyers to pay for their own background checks.

Colorado has seen two of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history, and the legislation represented an effort to prevent those types of killings. The measures were also passed during a national debate over firearms violence reignited by the December slayings of 20 children and six adults at a school in Connecticut.

The laws' passages are considered a victory for Democrats in a state where gun ownership is treasured.

The Denver-based libertarian group Independence Institute said it would file a lawsuit either in state or federal court against Colorado seeking to block the measures that are set to go into effect on July 1.

"We're going to court and the people in 2014 are going to have an opportunity to choose a new legislature and a new governor," said David Kopel, research director for the group.

In another challenge to gun-control measures enacted after the Connecticut school shootings, a National Rifle Association affiliate filed a lawsuit on Thursday charging that New York state's laws banning assault weapons and limiting the size of ammunition magazines violated the constitutional right to bear arms.

MANUFACTURER LEAVING

Ammunition manufacturer Magpul, which has a plant in Erie, Colorado, threatened before the passage of the Colorado bill to leave the state and take away what its executives said were 200 direct jobs and 400 jobs at related companies in its supply chain.

On its Facebook page, Magpul said it would go through with the threat to move, and supporters posted comments inviting them to their own states such as Missouri and Nevada.

"Our transition to a new home will occur in a phased and orderly manner to allow us to continue to serve our customers during the move, as well as to allow an orderly transition for affected employees," the company's statement on Facebook said.

A representative for Magpul did not return calls.

Eric Brown, spokesman for the governor, said in an email that nothing in the bills signed by Hickenlooper would prevent Magpul from "manufacturing here and selling elsewhere."

Meanwhile, a number of county sheriffs in Colorado have said they cannot or will not enforce the new gun control laws, even as the governor's office has directed state officials to give law enforcement agencies technical guidance on how the magazine limits in particular should be interpreted and enforced.

"We expect sheriffs to follow all state laws to the best of their abilities," Brown said.

In July 2012, a gunman opened fire in a crowded theater at the opening night of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Colorado was also the site of a 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, where two teenagers shot dead a teacher and 12 other students before committing suicide.

San Diego Pandas Get a Snow Day

There was snow in San Diego this week ? well, at least for a lucky group of giant pandas.

Over 15 tons of shaved ice were blown into the San Diego Zoo's panda exhibit Tuesday morning (March 19) to give the endangered bears a chance to play in the powder they would experience in their natural habitat.

The snow day was a first for Xiao Liwu ? or "Mr. Wu," as keepers have taken to calling him. The charismatic cub was born over the summer to panda mom Bai Yun, who was making "snow pandas" on Tuesday while Xiao Liwu climbed on top of her.

"Xiao Liwu was jumping on Mom, wrestling with her and getting used to being thrown in the snow by mama bear," Jennifer Becerra, San Diego Zoo senior keeper, said in a statement. "He was definitely enjoying the snow and running around. I've never seen him so wired up."

Xiao Liwu, whose name means "Little Gift," was the sixth cub born to Bai Yun ("White Cloud"). All the San Diego Zoo giant pandas are on a research loan from China, as part of a long-term captive breeding program. (Four of Xiao Liwu's siblings have already been moved from California to China.)

Today there are 44 giant pandas living in zoos outside of China, where the bears' only current natural home exists. As just 1,600 pandas are thought to be left in the wild, researchers maintain that captive breeding is an important way study and conserve the endangered species. In addition to habitat loss from human activities and low reproductive rates, giant pandas' survival is also threatened by climate change. A study released in the journal Nature Climate Change last year found that global warming could wipe out much of the bears' chief food source, bamboo, over the next century.

Creating A Addition Building Plan And Estimating Garage Addition ...

Your choice to include on a storage addition to a home is one of the finest home improvement projects a homeowner will make. A garage addition offers great energy and can dramatically increase the value of a property. Prior to actually breaking floor, however, a garage addition approach and garage addition prices estimates must be produced. A garage addition plan begins with making initial images of the garage addition idea and considering how it will tie in with the prevailing house construction. It is essential with this phase to think about ratios between the newest garage improvement and the house, though many homeowners prefer a sizable garage. To pleasantly seem attractive from the street the garage inclusion length shouldn?t exceed two-thirds the length of the home. Otherwise the storage improvement can overwhelm the existing home structure. Because it is generally less obvious from the street, the depth or breadth of the garage inclusion is less critical from an aesthetic perspective. When the initial drawings have been done, step by step storage inclusion building programs ought to be produced. With regards to the difficulty of the garage addition both the homeowner or a designer could form the particular garage addition building plans. In any case, the ideas should include scaly images with dimensions, and cross-sectional design views with constructional materials chosen. The cross-sectional views includes from the concrete footings all the way to the peak of the roof. Each new move from the footings up must be carefully drawn. Cases include: the footing/foundation transition, the foundation/sill dish transition, and the wall/roof rafter transition. The ideas should also add a complete bill of materials for the task. Furthermore, all property lines and proper setbacks must be clearly shown in the images. Calculating the garage addition charges is dependent upon who is making the addition. If the homeowner ideas on acting as their own general contractor and doing a number of the work (e.g. the framework) then prices will have to be determined beginning with the bill of materials generated throughout the planning phase. With where they can fill in the pricing information for the particular things for the project an extensive bill of materials a homeowner can give much of the list to any home improvement center. For specialty items such as garage doors, garage door openers, and in some instances lighting and plumbing fixtures (if needed for the garage supplement) the homeowner might need to contact specialty shops for pricing. The subcontractors are often able to offer some unit pricing (e.g. garage doors). If the homeowner is acting as his or her own general contractor and will demand subcontractors, then it is important that they determine early the subcontractors and review together the plans and development schedule. Each subcontractor should supply a firm fixed estimate for the specific job in line with the programs and bill of materials. Additionally their bid also needs to include start/complete schedules for the specific job. With storage inclusion plans and costs estimates in place the homeowner may then continue with pulling permits and creating a fairly accurate building routine. Once permits have already been accepted, construction of the garage inclusion may start. It?s important to note, however, that despite having the best strategies set up things occur and schedules slip. To offset schedule slips a homeowner acting as his or her own general contractor must element in some stream to the schedule and often be looking ahead several weeks during the entire project. They should routinely check with vendors to ensure building material may occur when required and should sporadically check with subcontractors to ensure that their agendas remain in line with your storage addition challenge. With these simple planning, budgeting and scheduling issues addressed ahead of the start of project, developing a garage addition can be a good knowledge both pre and post design phase. For more information on building the Garage Addition Bid Sheet is seen by a garage addition from HomeAdditionPlus.com. The Garage Addition Bid Sheet contains a thorough survey (Request for Quote) that a homeowner can offer to potential general contractors and subcontractors for bidding the garage inclusion. In addition, the Garage Addition Bid sheet also contains estimated costs and time intervals for building a storage addition as well as a listing of important home product producers. Eventually, the Garage Addition Bid Sheet includes a comprehensive pair of tips and advice on making sure the storage improvement is built properly and on time and budget.Austex Garage Doors 4407 Bee Caves Rd West Lake Hills, TX 78746 512-250-5122 http://www.austexgaragedoors.com partner sites
