Rosacea may be caused by mite faeces in your pores

There are tiny bugs closely related to spiders living in the pores of your face. They have long been considered mere passengers, doing no harm beyond upsetting the squeamish. But they may be causing an ancient skin disease that is estimated to affect between 5 and 20 per cent of people worldwide, and 16 million in the US alone.

People aged between 30 and 60, especially women, sometimes develop rosacea: red inflamed skin, with swelling, roughness and fine, visible blood vessels, usually in the central zone of the face. Severe cases can resemble acne, irritate the eyes and lead to the bulbous red nose seen in caricatures of the elderly.

The disease affects all races but is known as the "curse of the Celts" as it is thought to especially affect people with very fair skin, although it may simply be more visible on their skin. Rosacea is commonly blamed on another alleged Celtic curse ? excessive drinking. But while alcohol can trigger a flare-up, so can many other kinds of stress. Teetotallers are just as susceptible, according to the US National Rosacea Society.

Kevin Kavanagh of the National University of Ireland, in Maynooth, now thinks he has discovered the cause ? and it isn't for the faint-hearted.

Tiny mites ? eight-legged arachnids related to spiders ? live in the pores of our facial skin. They are particularly fond of the hair follicles of eyebrows and eyelashes, and the oily pores most common on the nose, forehead and cheeks. Called Demodex, the mites eat sebum, or facial oil, and colonise your face at puberty.

Preference for stressed skin

They crawl about your face in the dark to mate, then crawl back into pores to lay their eggs and die. Healthy adults have around one or two mites per square centimetre of facial skin. People with rosacea, however, can have 10 times as many, says Kavanagh. Research suggests that the stress that causes flare-ups of rosacea changes the chemicals in sebum, making it better food for mites.

Rosacea often improves with antibacterial drugs that don't affect the mites, such as tetracyclines. Kavanagh thinks this is because rosacea is caused by a reaction to bacteria in the mite's faeces.

Demodex does not have an anus and therefore cannot get rid of its faeces. "Their abdomen just gets bigger and bigger, and when they die and decompose they release their faeces all at once in the pore," says Kavanagh. When the mites are numerous, he believes that the material is enough to trigger an immune reaction, inflammation and tissue damage.

Kavanagh notes that one kind of bacteria in the mites' guts, Bacillus oleronius, is killed by the antibiotics that work against rosacea, and not by other types of antibiotics. His lab reported in June that 80 per cent of people with the most common kind of rosacea have immune cells in their blood that react strongly to two proteins from B. Oleronius, releasing triggers of inflammation. Only 40 per cent of people without rosacea have this reaction.

Kavanagh is now trying to get funding to develop antibodies to the bacterial proteins, to track their location and link them more firmly to the disease. Ultimately, treatments aimed at the trigger proteins may prevent rosacea.

Bruce Buffer explains ?It?s fight time?

During recent UFC events, you may have noticed UFC Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer changing up his signature call of, "It's tiiiiiiiiiime" to "It's fight tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime."

I was confused by this. Why would Buffer mess with such announcing perfection? "It's time" is so well known that fans usually yell the phrase along with him. It's become as well known as his brother Michael Buffer's familiar "Let's get ready to rumble," which the other Buff rattles off at boxing events.

So what's the deal, Buff?

"I was trying some new things. I'm going through some marketing aspects, and that's all I can say right now. I wanted to try it for marketing purposes, but it's time is mine. We all know that. That's basically where it's at."

Buff, if you want to cover your fancy suits in logos, go for it. If you want to rename your signature move the Mickey's Malt Liquor 180, do it. Get that paper. But please please please don't change "It's Time."

Why Choose an ASE-Certified Auto Collision and Mechanical Repair

Last updated 4 hours 19 minutes ago

Searching for a competent and qualified auto repair center in Indianapolis?takes time and consideration. Choosing a shop with inferior quality will result in a number of negative side-effects. The task is often times complicated by the inconveniences that an auto collision causes. To make the choice easier, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972. Now, those looking for certified quality automotive service are able to look for the ASE-certified badge. Learn what this certification means below:

Knowledge

  • Properly performing any type of automotive repair work requires extensive knowledge of the specific task. The ASE badge ensures that the certified technician working on a vehicle knows every detail about the system or systems they are working on. Collision repair and vehicle body structures are also covered under ASE certification. While these areas are different from regular automotive repair, ASE-Certified technicians will know exactly how to properly manage and execute the job.

Training

  • It is necessary to be knowledgeable about automotive repair, but practical experience is also needed to utilize that knowledge. For this reason, any technician seeking an ASE certification must first have training and experience in order to become certified. Attaining this experience usually involves working on a range of vehicles, which expands the scope of the technician?s abilities.

Certification

  • The ASE certification process is involved, and requires a technician to have a thorough understanding of an area to become certified in it. Technicians generally go to school at a college or vocational school in order to gain the knowledge and required training to take the ASE examinations. There are ASE certifications for eight different areas in automotive repair: engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical and electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. To achieve an ASE Master Technician certification, the technician must obtain an ASE certification in every category. To ensure that ASE technicians are always kept up-to-date with current technologies, they are required to go through the certification process every few years.

Let the certified technicians at Hubler Express Collision make quality collision and automotive repairs in on your vehicle. Learn about all the services we offer by calling us at (888) 766-9720.

Automakers Concerned About Consumers Going Along With New Fuel Efficiency Standards

Past consumer behavior has the auto industry reacting with "mixed emotions" to today's Obama administration announcement of new fuel efficiency standards that will increase fuel economy to the equivalent of 54.5 mpg for cars and light-duty trucks by Model Year 2025, Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers told ABC News.

At a campaign event in Ames, Iowa, President Obama heralded the new announcement, telling a crowd of students that "we developed new fuel standards, developed new fuel standards so that your car will get nearly 55 miles per gallon by the middle of the next decade. That's going to save you money at the pump. That will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a level roughly equivalent to a year's worth of emissions from all the cars in the world."

Environmental groups also cheered, with the Union of Concerned Scientists claiming that the standards will save consumers nearly $8,000 over the lifetime of the new 2025 vehicles, while reducing "global warming emissions by as much as 270 million metric tons in 2030-the equivalent of shutting down 65 coal-fired power plants for one year."

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers issued a statement expressing some support. Bergquist said that members of her association - which includes not just American auto manufacturers such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation but also importers such as BMW Group and Toyota - are happy for the singular standard issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"For years one of our top priorities was to have a distinct national standard," as opposed to what the Alliance referred to in a statement as to the "conflicting requirements from several regulatory bodies raise costs, ultimately taking money out of consumers' pockets and hurting sales."

That said, Bergquist said, "these are really ambitious aggressive standards."

Fuel efficient vehicles are already available in many instances, she said. "Consumers need to buy them. If they don't we may well fall short" of the goals necessary for today's standards to actually be feasible.

In addition to consumers buying fuel efficient vehicles in greater numbers, she said, clean diesel needs to become more available - it's only in roughly half of U.S. service stations - as do charging stations. Half of new vehicles sold in Europe se clean diesel, she said, while in the U.S. that number is closer to two percent. Anecdotally, automakers are told by consumers that they would be more willing to buy clean diesel vehicles if the fuel were more widespread. "We see the same thing with electric vehicles," she said.

For that reason, the automakers say they're glad that the new rule includes an April 2018 "mid-term evaluation" where the government can thoroughly review marketplace conditions. "Our first choice is we want to sell them in high volumes," she said, "but if that doesn't happen for some reason we need to address that sooner rather than later so we can see what needs to be done to encourage consumers."

The biggest driver of consumer behavior when it comes to cars "ultimately goes to the question of 'What's the price of gasoline?'" she said. "In Europe, the price is eight dollars a gallon and consumers are driving different vehicles."

While noting that the financial industry underlines that past experience does not necessarily predict future success, Bergquist noted that hybrid vehicles have been on the market for approximately a decade, and today constitute only 2- 2.5% of vehicle sales in the U.S.

The new standards are "very, very challenging," she said, while underlining, "we understand the need for greater energy security."

Magic Lantern 2.3 Creates No-Hassle Time Lapse Videos and Provides Other Awesome Features for Your Canon DSLR [Video]

Magic Lantern 2.3 Creates No-Hassle Time Lapse Videos and Provides Other Awesome Features for Your Canon DSLRCanon DSLRs: Magic Lantern is custom firmware for select Canon DSLRs. It provides an array of advanced video and imaging features that Canon doesn't include by default. The latest update makes it even more often by providing automatic HDR bracketing, better contrast and saturation adjustments, in-depth image analysis, and the coolest part: no-hassle time lapse videos.

The time lapse feature is pretty incredible because it can record at an automatic interval and automatically assemble it as a video file (instead of a series of pictures) when you're done. This is significantly easier than doing the work yourself later (although that's an option as well). The update is available for a number of popular Canon DSLRs, such as the 5D Mark II, 50D, 60D, 500D, and 600D. Support is forthcoming for the 5D Mark III and the 650D (T4i). For more on the update, check out the full release notes on Magic Lantern's site. If you want to learn how the custom firmware works, read our guide.

Short- and mid-term cardiovascular effects of Japan's 2011 earthquake and tsunami: Incidence rises with the seismic peak

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The Japanese earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, which hit the north-east coast of Japan with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale, was one of the largest ocean-trench earthquakes ever recorded in Japan. The tsunami caused huge damage, including 15,861 dead and 3018 missing persons, and, as of 6 June 2012, 388,783 destroyed homes.

Following an investigation of the ambulance records made by doctors in the Miyagi prefecture, close to the epicentre of the earthquake and where the damage was greatest, cardiologist Dr Hiroaki Shimokawa and colleagues from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine at Sendai, Japan, found that the weekly occurrence of five conditions -- heart failure, acute coronary syndrome (including unstable angina and acute MI), stroke, cardio-pulmonary arrest and pneumonia -- all increased sharply soon after the earthquake occurred.

Such reactions -- in ACS, stroke and pulmonary embolism -- have been reported before, said Dr Shimokawa, in Japan, China and the USA. However, these studies reported only the short-term occurrence of individual CVD events, and the mid-term CVD effects of such great earthquakes remain to be elucidated. To this end, the study examined all ambulance transport records in the Miyagi prefecture from 11 February to 30 June for each year from 2008 to 2011 (ie, four weeks before to 16 weeks after 11 March, a total of 124,152 records). Incidence records from before, during and after the earthquake disaster were compared, the aftershocks counted and recorded according to a seismic intensity of 1 or greater.

The number of aftershocks in the Miyagi prefecture was frequent during the six weeks after the earthquake, and the second peak was noted as a large aftershock on 7 April 2011 (magnitude of 7.0). Compared with the previous three years, the significant increases in the occurrence of heart failure and pneumonia were steadily prolonged for more than six weeks after the tsunami struck. On the other hand, the incident increases in stroke and cardio-pulmonary arrest followed the pattern of the first and aftershock seismic peaks. The rapid increases in the occurrence of acute coronary syndromes and cardio-pulmonary arrest was followed by a sharp and significant decline. Interestingly, said Dr Shimokawa, age, sex or residence area did not significantly affect the occurrences of CVD during or following the tsunami.

"To the best of our knowledge," he added, "this is the first report to describe the mid-term course of major cardiovascular events and pneumonia after a great earthquake in a large population. In particular, our findings provide the first evidence that the incidence of heart failure was markedly increased over a long period afterwards." Prevalence of pneumonia, a well known risk factor for deteriorating heart failure, was significantly increased.

The Tohoku University study also found -- as reflected in self-monitoring measurements -- that blood pressure was significantly elevated after the Earthquake. However, transport disruption following the tsunami interrupted delivery of regular medications, such as antihypertensive or antithrombotic drugs, and this may have contributed to the increased cardiovascular events. There was also an increase in the occurrences of ventricular tachyarrhythmias in patients with implantable cardiac defibrillators.

"Taken together," said Dr Shimokawa, "we consider that discontinuation of drugs, activated sympathetic nervous system, rising blood pressure, and the increased occurrence of tachyarrhythmia and infections were all involved in the increased occurrence of cardiovascular events after the Great Earthquake of Japan."

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.

TV repairs in Perth, electrician perth - IdeaMarketers.com

After years of saving money, now you can finally afford to purchase your own house. Even if you can't afford to buy a brand new and built from the ground with your specifications and design, still buying a pre-owned house is a feat that you are about to accomplish. There really is nothing wrong with beginning to live independently and starting off with buying and using second-hand items, your house included.

New Old House

If you are on the lookout for buying your very own home check out the classified ads or talk to realtors directly. Once you see the house that you want and if it is within your budget range, make sure that everything inside is still safe.

Hiring an electrician in Perth and having your house checked must be on the top of the priority list. You don't want your house burned down to the ground because of faulty electrical wiring. The electrician can also rewire your house and help you install your entertainment system (used or repaired), smoke alarms or just do a routine maintenance check-up to help you feel at ease that your house is electrically sound.

You can make an old house look like new once again. Every house has its own personality, get to know your "new ?old' house" and bring out its personality partnered with yours.

It doesn't matter if you can't afford a brand new house, the important thing is that you make it a home and you can call it your own. Just make sure that everything is working properly and that you are safe inside your home.

Used appliances

When furnishing your home, you can start by buying appliances that are not brand new. Of course when you can afford to buy it new, then by all means do so. The point is that there is nothing wrong with used items. If you have an old and broken TV, before throwing it away, consider having it repaired. TV repairs in Perth can be easily found everywhere. There are also shops that would go to your home and repair it on site.

Even your living room can be furnished with used items. If you see a couch or a living room set that is being sold cheaply at flea markets and you can see that it can still be repaired, then think outside the box and have it re-upholstered. Re-upholstering can be cheaper than buying brand new.

The possibilities are endless if you know how to save money and do things on your own.

Indy mayor signs domestic partner benefits measure

Updated: August 24, 2012 2:05AM

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has signed an ordinance extending the health care benefits of city employees to their domestic partners.

The Republican mayor tweeted Thursday he signed the ordinance that cleared the City-County Council last week.

Ballard had said that he preferred that the city offer benefits only to same-sex domestic partners because offering them to heterosexual partners might provide a disincentive to marry.

City officials have estimated that fewer than 30 of nearly 7,500 eligible workers would apply for the coverage. That would increase the city?s health insurance costs by about $200,000, or less than 0.4 percent of the $58 million now spent.

Similar benefits are offered by other cities including Bloomington and Carmel; universities including Indiana, Purdue and Ball State; and private employers including Eli Lilly and Co.

Genetically Engineering Babies a Moral Obligation, Says Ethicist

You're talking about something different from the OP.

I would first find fault with the designation of "designer" humans. Are in vitro fertilized embryos "designer"? After all, these are people which shouldn't exist, their parents are empirically incapable of conceiving children, an intervention has occurred (which kills several fertilized embryos in the process) in order to conceive a child, because of the parents' belief that they are incomplete without children -- it is their wish, their sensibility, their purchase, and not their right or their nature. The child is a plan, a consumer product, alas, only available to the relatively wealthy.

Further, places much less well off than rich US medical clinics already offer "designer" humans, in China and India it's common for mothers to simply cull their female zygotes, they abort them. This is plainly an evil thing, it's bad practically and bad morally. But, how do you prevent it? What steps are you willing to go to to prevent the abortion of "undesirable" zygotes? You can ban abortion, but that only bans it for people that can't buy a plane ticket or have access to "discrete" services, and a lot of people believe they have a right to have abortions. The government could examine all expectant mothers and license abortions, forbidding ones that meet their politically-correct standard of "by design." Of course, that designation is up for debate, and something like malaria susceptibility might or might not be defect dependent on local conditions, the "luck" of such a trait given their parents genotype.

And then, we're not just talking about giving people glowing ears or racing stripes, we're also talking about making sure they'll never contract HIV, or the plague, or congenital blindness. What do you tell someone who's born with an abnormality? "Sorry, but our advanced moral consciousness demands that you be born blind, because it would be a violation of human dignity for you not to be"? Why are genotypic changes such a big deal, but phenotypic modifications, like vaccines, not a "violation of human dignity"? Is it a violation of human dignity that I'm immune to measles, because I grew up rich and white in the western world, while a billion Africans are not?

Juncker: Greece won't leave eurozone

(AP) ? Greece won't leave the 17-nation eurozone, Luxembourg's prime minister said, arguing in an interview published Saturday that an exit wouldn't be politically feasible and would carry unforeseeable risks.

Greece has been kept afloat by international loans, but has fallen behind on implementing reforms and austerity measures demanded in exchange, fueling impatience in Germany and other prosperous nations and speculation about a possible euro exit.

But Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who also chairs eurozone finance ministers' meetings, was quoted as saying in an interview with Austrian newspaper Tiroler Tageszeitung: "It will not happen ? unless Greece violates all the conditions and keeps to no agreements."

"In the case of a total refusal by Greece regarding budget consolidation and structural reforms, one would have to deal with the question," he said, according to the report. "But because I assume that Greece will try to redouble its efforts and achieve the targets that have been set, there is no reason to assume that this exit scenario can become relevant."

Juncker said an exit would be "technically," but not "politically" feasible and insisted: "We are not working on it."

There's little enthusiasm among creditors such as Germany for granting Greece more time to fulfill the terms of its international aid packages or other concessions. Juncker said it wasn't possible to say whether Athens might be granted more time before a report next month from its debt inspectors, but he doesn't currently consider an extension "absolutely necessary."

Germany's vice chancellor, Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, said recently that the idea of Greece leaving the euro has "lost its horror." A regional official with one of the country's governing parties, Bavarian state finance minister Markus Soeder, has called for Greece to leave the currency this year and argued that "an example must be made of Athens."

There has been no such talk from Chancellor Angela Merkel or Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, though they also have shown little appetite for concessions.

"I have always said that we can help the Greeks, but we cannot responsibly throw money into a bottomless pit," Schaeuble said during an appearance Saturday at his ministry's annual open day.

He conceded that "it is immensely difficult for the Greeks," and said that Germans shouldn't speak "disrespectfully" of other nations.

Ryan says he did seek economic stimulus money

Republican vice presidential candidate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. gestures during a campaign stop at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012. (AP Photo/Tribune Review, Justin Merriman ) PITTSBURGH OUT

(AP) ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Thursday reversed course and acknowledged lobbying the government for millions of dollars in economic stimulus money after twice denying he had done so.

The Wisconsin congressman said he had forgotten that his office sent letters ? with his signature ? to the Energy and Labor departments asking for money from the stimulus program on behalf of two companies in his home state.

"They should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that," Ryan said in a written statement released only after he again denied requesting stimulus funds Thursday in an Ohio television interview.

Ryan's denial in an interview with Cincinnati's WCPO-TV contradicted letters he wrote in 2009 to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis seeking stimulus grant money for two Wisconsin energy conservation companies. One of them, the nonprofit Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corp., later received $20.3 million from the Energy Department to help homes and businesses improve energy efficiency, according to federal records.

"After having these letters called to my attention I checked into them, and they were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled," Ryan said in a statement late Thursday. "This is why I didn't recall the letters earlier."

The congressman's denial came as new audio surfaced of Ryan telling Boston's WBZ Radio two years ago that he "did not ask for stimulus money" in response to a caller's question about the recovery program. "I'm not one who votes for something and then writes to the government to ask them to send us money," Ryan said. The exchange was first reported Thursday by The Boston Globe.

But a year earlier in his request to Chu for funds for the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corp. Ryan said the stimulus cash would help his state create thousands of new jobs, save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The apparent contradiction underscores Ryan's conflicts with his larger federal budget proposal as the House Budget Committee chairman. That plan would slash Energy Department programs aimed at creating green jobs and calls for "getting Washington out of the business of picking winners and losers in the economy ? and that includes our energy sector."

Ryan's actions in Congress have been drawing fresh scrutiny since he was named last weekend as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate.

The vice presidential contender is not alone among Republicans who criticized the stimulus plan only to seek money later. Georgia's Republican senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, for example, blasted the bill as a bloated government giveaway yet asked then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates to steer $50 million in stimulus money to a constituent's bio-energy project.

Ryan's views are also consistent with Romney's long-held position that the stimulus was a flawed idea that did not create private sector jobs.

"That stimulus didn't work," Romney said at an Ohio speech in June. "That stimulus didn't put more private-sector people to work."

Yet in Ryan's letter to the Labor Department in October 2009, he backed the Energy Center of Wisconsin's grant application for stimulus money "to develop an industry-driven training and placement agenda that intends to place 1,000 workers in green jobs." The company did not win the Labor Department grant, federal records show.

Despite the letter, Ryan echoed Romney's position on Thursday.

"Regardless, it's clear that the Obama stimulus did nothing to stimulate the economy, and now the president is asking to do it all over again," he said.

Specialty Home Improvement Remodeling Projects | Easy Specs

The purpose of a home improvement remodeling project is to make your home more attractive and functional. Some of the usual improvements involve redoing floor and wall coverings, adding cabinetry, and improving the lighting. Other choices are installing new fixtures, knocking out or building new walls, and even something as simple as painting. Yet, some of the most exciting projects involve adding something special to an existing home.

Home Entertainment

One home improvement remodeling task you might like to do is to install an entertainment system that works throughout your home. The setup is crucial. The wiring for the system has to be run behind the drywall. This means that you either add this as a part of a larger renovation project that includes removing the drywall, or you have to string the wiring behind the drywall some other way.

You will have outlets behind your whole home entertainment system to plug in the components to AC current.

There should be jacks for the cable and Ethernet feeds. You connect the audio wiring in each room to a special outlet near the entertainment system, and then hook it up. When you have successfully installed the system you should be able to listen to different music all over the house, and watch movies with surround sound in your main entertainment room and from any TV in the house.

This installation process must be done carefully to achieve maximum functionality and maintain an attractive appearance. If you have any qualms about doing this home improvement remodeling work yourself, it is a good idea to use a professional remodeling company to make sure it is done right.

Home Security

Installing a home security system is another one of those home improvement remodeling projects that must be hard-wired into the house.

The wiring runs to a central location, usually in a basement or utility room. At this spot, you put the master controls and alert relays. Then, throughout the house, you install sensors to catch break-ins, fires, and elevated levels of carbon monoxide.

To do the job, you will have to know the various kinds of sensors and how to install each one. There are magnet sensors, switch door sensors, glass-breaking sensors, carbon monoxide sensors, smoke sensors and heat sensors. The sensors must be placed carefully or the alarms might go off when they are not supposed to. Conversely, if you do not wire the sensors in appropriately, the alarms might not sound at all. This is a job that you must be sure you can do correctly; otherwise you will be putting your family?s security at risk.

Green Living

One type of specialty task that is becoming more and more commonplace is a green home improvement remodeling project. There is so much that you can do to improve the energy efficiency of your home that it is a shame not to do what you can.

A green remodeling job can include energy efficient appliances and fixtures. It can mean increasing the insulation in your house or getting more efficient windows or doors. It can also mean working towards net zero energy consumption by producing energy with solar panels. A skilled home improvement remodeling company can help you find all the best ways to go green.

Ennis sets record for heptathlon hurdles

(AP) ? Talk about your crowd pleasers.

In an opening session of Olympic track unlike any in recent memory, heptathlete Jessica Ennis and a handful of her British teammates gave fans at jam-packed Olympic Stadium a show worth the early wake-up call.

With nearly all 80,000 seats filled for the first taste of Olympic track and field Friday, Ennis wowed the home crowd by finishing the 100-meter hurdles in 12.54 seconds, the fastest time ever in the heptathlon's first event.

How fast? It matched Dawn Harper's gold-winning time in the 100-meter hurdle final at the Beijing Games ? and would've been good enough to take that title at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics.

"Amazing. So loud. When you step up to jump or get in your blocks, they really get behind you. It's a great feeling," Ennis said. "I felt strangely calm. I'm normally quite nervous before the hurdles. Just coming out in the stadium and seeing the crowd was such an amazing feeling. It kind of gives you goose bumps."

Imagine what a treat it was for the home fans, who have been wringing their hands over every aspect of these games: the megamillion-pound costs, the security, the quality of the subway and train service and, of course, the quality of the athletes who would be representing the host country.

On this particular morning, everything worked out better than they could have hoped.

Fans rolled out of bed, poured into the javelin trains heading to Olympic Park, jammed the turnstiles at the stadium and were in place before Ennis left the warm-up area shortly before 10 a.m. They waved their Union Jacks and cheered every British athlete with roars often reserved for gold medalists.

"The crowd ? I have no words to describe," said British triple jumper Yamile Aldama. "I've been to five Olympic Games and in qualifying, you never experience this. Never. It's just always kind of empty because it's in the mornings. This is great. This is 'Great' Britain. British people are great. They like athletics. They like sport."

And to think, a short week ago, so much of the buzz at these Olympics was about fans not showing up to events.

"A fabulous, fabulous experience," said British shot putter Carl Myerscough, who finished 14th in qualifying and won't move onto the final. "It's what I expected. I knew it was going to be amazing. You can't really replicate it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime feeling. All the more reason I'm disappointed. I maybe was guilty of trying too hard."

Ennis, dealing nicely with the pressure of competing on home turf with gold-medal expectations, broke the 7-year-old world mark in the heptathlon hurdles (12.62) held by Frenchwoman Eunice Barber and the Olympic record (12.69) held since 1988 by six-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

"I literally cannot believe that," Ennis said. "That's crazy, so crazy. I'm just so glad I did it here."

The deafening roars kept coming for Ennis each time she cleared a height in the second of heptathlon's seven events, the high jump. When she finally missed, the crowd gasped and groaned.

Not to worry. Ennis' mark of 6 feet, 1? inches left her in the lead with 2,249 points ? 25 ahead of American Hyleas Fountain, the 2008 silver medalist, with the shot put and 200 meters set for Friday night.

Heptathlon is often one of the more overlooked, underappreciated events at a track meet. Not on this day, though.

"It's a great start to the athletic program now," Ennis said. "I want to perform the best I can. Hopefully, that will roll on to the next few days."

Ennis was one of five women to set personal bests in the fifth hurdles heat alone, doing nothing to tamp down thoughts that the track in London, advertised as one of the fastest in the world, may live up to its billing.

"I had to get a bit closer to the screen to doublecheck the time," said Britain's world-champion 400-meter runner, Dai Greene. "Those sort of things are amazing for team morale."

Greene responded by winning his opening heat in 48.98 seconds.

Britain's Christine Ohuruogu, the defending women's 400 Olympic champion, qualified in 50.80 seconds.

Aldama made it through in the triple jump with a second-place finish and another British heptathlete, 19-year-old Katarina Johnson-Thompson, finished second in the high jump, drawing huge applause when she cleared 6-2? (1.89). She finished the morning in third place overall, 103 points behind Ennis, and came off the track beaming.

"It's hard to frown out there," she said.

In one of the day's few down notes, three-time hammer world champion Ivan Tsikhan of Belarus was kicked out of the Olympics because a retest of a sample he gave at the 2004 Olympics came back positive. He won the silver medal that year.

The morning also featured preliminary heats in the women's 100 meters, with the Jamaican sprinters ? Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart ? still waiting for Friday night's session.

Meanwhile, American Sanya Richards-Ross qualified in the 400 in 51.78 seconds, practically walking the last 20 meters in a downpour. Often a headliner at meets where she runs, Richards-Ross knew she got second billing this morning.

"You saw Jessica Ennis in the 100. Everybody in the back was kind of buzzing. There's going to be some phenomenal performances here," Richards-Ross said.

Though it's not unheard of for a big crowd to show for a morning session ? such as when one of China's most famous athletes, hurdler Liu Xiang, was supposed to run in prelims at the Beijing Games ? more often than not, these are sparsely attended, somewhat sleepy affairs, primarily because mornings almost always mean preliminaries. The big events, as well as the medals, are reserved for the evenings.

There was nothing sleepy about this morning, however, and even the head of track's governing body took notice.

"I do not remember the last time this happened, and it shows the great affection Britain has for our sport," IAAF President Lamine Diack said.
