2 fishermen missing in central Florida lake

Authorities are searching for two fishermen whose undamaged boat was found stranded in a central Florida lake.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission continued searching Sunday for Charles Jackson of Deltona and Jason Cobb of Osteen.

Jackson's boat was found Saturday in Lake Jesup after relatives reported the men overdue from a fishing trip.

Conservation commission spokeswoman Joy Hill says the men left in a 15-foot boat early Saturday. The boat was later found in some cattails north of their camp.

Hill says the men may have been ejected from the boat. It contained two life jackets, two paddles and eight unopened beer cans.

Hill says the lake has a large alligator population but it's too cold for them to be very active.

Broncos take top spot with 38-3 win over Chiefs

DENVER (AP) ? Peyton Manning figured one one-handed catch deserved another.

So, up the ladder he went ? throwing the ball high in the back of the end zone to Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas leaped and brought it down with his right hand, then got both feet down inside the line for a touchdown. With that, he joined Eric Decker in Denver's one-handed-touchdown club Sunday and gave the Broncos some otherworldly highlights to go with their home-field advantage throughout the playoffs after a 38-3 runaway over the Kansas City Chiefs.

"They claim they can do that all the time," said cornerback Champ Bailey, who got to watch the replays of both catches about a half-dozen times on the scoreboard. "They say they practice that. I don't see it. But as long as they do it on Sunday, I'm all for it. Those are some great, hard-working boys and I expect nothing less."

Manning, in search of his fifth MVP award and, yes, a second Super Bowl title, finished 23 for 29 for 304 yards, three scores and a 144.8 passer rating. One of his main competitors for the award, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings, ran for 199 yards in a 37-34 win over Green Bay that secured a playoff berth.

That one went down to the wire. Manning was out of his game by the fourth quarter.

This was the second straight Sunday he used a grey-and-orange glove to prepare for the cold, playoff weather he could face at home the next two games.

"I threw it OK today, I guess," said Manning, who finished the season with 4,659 yards, 37 touchdowns and a 105.8 passer rating, all second best in his 15-year career.

Thanks to Houston's 28-16 loss to Indianapolis before the Broncos kicked off, Denver (13-3) will be the top seed for the sixth time. The Broncos made the Super Bowl four of the previous five times.

Though the Chiefs (2-14) gave the Broncos as tough a tussle as anyone during their 11-game winning streak ? in a 17-9 loss last month ? this wasn't expected to be much of a game. It wasn't.

Leave it to Manning, ever the perfectionist, to ramp up the degree of difficulty.

On the touchdown to Decker, Manning slightly overthrew the pass but Decker brought the ball into his helmet with his left hand, had it pinball against his facemask twice, then cradled it with both hands as he was falling to the ground.

"Peyton throws the ball up, giving us a chance to make a play. It's our job to catch it," Decker said.

The touchdown to the 6-foot-3 Thomas mirrored a TD pass Manning threw to Decker last week against Cleveland: high in the back of the end zone where only his receiver could catch it.

"That was probably the limit right there," Manning said. "But I've seen him in practice. He can jump. He can really elevate. It's hard to throw it over his head, I'll say that."

The Thomas touchdown made it 28-3 and the celebration was on. The only trip the Broncos will have to make on their road to a championship would be to New Orleans for the Super Bowl. They'll open the playoffs at home the weekend of Jan. 12-13 against Baltimore, Cincinnati or Manning's old team, the Colts.

Coach John Fox, in search of his second trip to the Super Bowl, won his 100th career game. Thomas and linebacker Wesley Woodyard congratulated him with a big splash of orange Gatorade at the end.

"It's an accomplishment, but it's something that was a lot of people's work. It wasn't one guy," Fox said.

Nor would Manning take all the credit for all he's accomplished in this, a comeback season in which he admittedly had no expectations.

This marked his 73rd three-touchdown game, surpassing the record held by Brett Favre. Manning closed the regular season only 41 yards short of his career high.

"It's been a gratifying regular season," Manning said. "I will admit that. It is certainly more than I expected. I'm grateful and humble for it."

On the other end of the spectrum are the Chiefs, who finished with 119 yards of offense and wrapped up the first pick in next year's draft.

Coach Romeo Crennel watched the game from the sideline, leaning on a crutch, after having his knee drained of fluid earlier in the week. Many in Kansas City expect him to be unemployed soon.

"I told him it's been a long one," Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith said about his postgame conversation with Crennel. "Sorry it didn't turn out the way (we wanted). I have faith in you and that's all that matters."

The Broncos swept six games in the division for the first time since 1998 ? the last time they won the Super Bowl.

John Elway retired after that one. Now, he's back, running Denver's front office, and he signed Manning with only one goal in mind: a third Lombardi Trophy.

For a brief glimmer, this could have been a game. The Broncos led 7-0 when Ronnie Hillman fumbled and Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers picked it up and was sprinting toward the end zone.

Manning cut off the Flowers return, allowing tight end Joel Dreessen to drag down Flowers at the 12. The Chiefs settled for a field goal and the Broncos scored the next 31 points.

Notes: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles had 53 yards to finish the season with 1,509. ... Broncos FS Rahim Moore got his first career sack and Von Miller had one to bring his season total to 18?. ... Hillman wasn't seen against after his fumble. Lance Ball replaced him as Knowshon Moreno's backup and led the team with 66 yards on 15 carries.

NYC suspects had 'terrorist encyclopedia,' police say

By Chris Francescani, Reuters

Police arrested a New York City couple in their apartment on Saturday after authorities investigating a credit card theft found a highly explosive compound, bomb-making manuals, a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition, officials said on Monday.

Morgan Gliedman, 27, and Aaron Greene, 31, are being charged with two counts of suspicion of criminal possession of a weapon, for the shotgun, court documents show.?

One sheaf of papers found in the apartment had a cover page that read "The Terrorist Encyclopedia," according to court documents.?

Greene has been arraigned and held without bail, according to a law enforcement official involved in the investigation, who was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.?

Gliedman had not yet been arraigned on Monday morning, said a spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.?

Police went to the couple's Greenwich Village apartment Saturday to question Gliedman, the daughter of a prominent New York doctor, to investigate a credit card theft, according to a second law enforcement official.?

At the apartment, detectives discovered a plastic bottle containing seven grams of Hexamethylene triperoxide diaminean, or HMTD, court documents show.?

HMTD is commonly used in homemade bombs. The discovery prompted the evacuation of nearby buildings, the second source said.?

Police also discovered a cache of bomb-making manuals and handwritten notebooks containing chemical formulas, the second source said.?

Additionally, investigators recovered a 12-gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun, ammunition, nine high-capacity rifle magazines and a flare launcher, the second source said.?

Law enforcement officials said Gliedman was the son of Paul Gliedman, director of radiation oncology at Beth Israel Hospital in Brooklyn.?

Neither Gliedman nor his wife, Susyn Schops Gliedman, a Douglas Elliman realtor, returned calls for comment.?

Morgan Gliedman studied creative writing at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, according to her Facebook page, which contains a photo of Gliedman outside a pink dressing room, posing in a black, scoop-neck sweater and red checkered skirt.?

Greene attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to the New York Post, which first reported the arrests.?

The newspaper quoted a law enforcement source as saying that Greene was an Occupy Wall Street activist whose political views were "extreme."?

Two spokesmen for Occupy Wall Street's New York chapter said they had no knowledge of Greene.?

NBC News stonewalls inquiries regarding David ... - Legal Insurrection

As previously reported, last Sunday David Gregory held up what he described as?high capacity AR-15 ammunition magazine, which would violate the District of Columbia?s gun law if the magazine were real.

My multiple attempts last?Sunday?to obtain a response from NBC News as to whether the magazine was real were met with stone cold silence.? None of the three senior communications executives with responsibility for Meet the Press responded.

Now there is news via Breitbart.com? (h/t Drudge) that the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is investigating.

I spoke with Officer Alali, the spokesman on duty today at the MPD, who refused any further comment except to confirm that there is an ?active investigation.?

It may be even worse for Gregory and NBC News.? According to an e-mail received by The Patriots Perspective website, which originally broke the Gregory story, NBC News had inquired whether it was permitted to use the magazine and was told that it was not permitted.? The authenticity of the email has not been verified.

Approximately two hours ago I emailed the same three senior communications executives at NBC News asking for them to confirm or deny this information, but none has responded.

I also asked MPD Officer Alali about it, and he said he could not comment on anything other than the fact that there was an active investigation.? He would not comment on whether ?customerservice.mpd2.dc.gov?? ?customerservice.mpd2@dc.gov??was a legitimate address or anything regarding the email and whether NBC News was warned not to use the magazine.

If it turns out that the information in the email is verified, this would change the nature of the incident from an unknowing violation to a possible knowing violation.? While intent is not a part of the crime, it certainly may affect prosecutorial discretion if there were a prior warning.

Regardless of whether there was a warning, if the magazine were just a prop,? one would expect a prompt response from NBC News instead of stonewalling.

Related:? The importance of prosecuting David Gregory if he violated D.C.?s gun law

Update: Gregory?s exact words were ?here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets.?

Update 7:20 p.m. ? As to the purported email from the MPD stating that NBC?s request to use a high capacity magazine was denied, I have not received any official response from the MPD, but a source who requested anonymity, but who I was able to verify as working for D.C. government, provided the following information: ?? the Metropolitan Police Department email reply you received is genuine. DC Government uses ?Intranet Quorum? software designed by Lockheed to manage general inquires. The email address and the subject line of the email you received are consistent with that software.? I will be following up with MPD about this tomorrow.

Top 5 gadgets for Christmas 2012 | Business Productivity

Last year I wrote two wish lists to Santa Claus, one with books I wanted for Christmas and one with cool gadgets. This year I?m focusing on the top five gadgets I would be ecstatic if Santa gave me. My wish list this year contains a mix of technical things covering all aspects of life, from entertainment, fun, and exercise to productivity. Here it is:

1. Music anywhere with AQ SmartSpeakers

Today most of us have access to unlimited music on a wide range of devices. Personally I use Spotify, and I can listen to music on my computers, my iPad and mobile. At home I listen to music though our Sonos speakers, but I want to be able to listen to music wherever I am ? in our summer house, the backyard, in the hotel when on vacation ? literally wherever I am. So, to solve this I would be thrilled if Santa got me a set of AQ portable SmartSpeakers.

These speakers are literally wireless ? you don?t need any audio cables or power cables. This means that you can take them with you and place them wherever you are. The rechargeable battery can play for 10 hours before you need to plug it in for a recharge. You can send music to the speakers via a wide range of devices and applications. You can read the full specification here. I?m hoping I?ll be able to play my Christmas playlist on a pair of these when I go home to Sweden for the holiday.

2. Fun for the whole family with Just Dance 4

Christmas is really a time for families to get together and play fun games. When I was a child we used to have Tetris competitions (I had the high score until my cousin hacked in to the high score list). Since you tend to eat a lot during Christmas I prefer games where you can move around and burn some calories. This year I?ve put the video game ?Just Dance 4? on my wish list. No matter if you have a Wii, a PlayStation or Xbox Kinect, you can enjoy this fun family game that?s all about dancing. Just follow the characters on the screen and copy their dance moves. Fun to play and fun to watch!

3. Lazy evenings in the sofa with Netflix

My husband and I both work a lot so we really cherish the moments when we?ve put the kids to bed and we can enjoy an evening in front of the TV. To get the most out of these evenings I would like a one year subscription of Netflix from Santa. This way we can easily browse popular TV shows and movies and watch them whenever we want.

4. A more fun way to get in shape with a Nike+ Fuelband

After enjoying all that great food during the Christmas holiday I will most definitely have to work hard to get back in shape. Being a technology geek, I think it?s much more fun to exercise if I can track my efforts on my computer. That?s why I?ve added a Nike+ Fuelband to my wish list. The wrist band, which also works as a watch, measures your movement during the day ? whether you are walking, jogging, dancing, or running after your children. It calculates the number of calories you?ve consumed, how many steps you have taken and it also indicates with a red, yellow or green light how close you are to reaching the exercise goal you have set up for the day. It also measures ?Nike Fuel,? a unique metric which provides comparable data across different sports. All the stored results are synchronized to your PC or mobile using the built in USB-cable or via Bluetooth. You can then analyze your daily, weekly and monthly performance and if you are very proud of your achievements (or just brave and honest), you can share your results with friends via facebook, Twitter or Path.

5. For lighter productivity in 2013 ? a Microsoft Surface

With the launch of Microsoft Windows 8 there are a lot of new touch-screen enabled, sleek tablets entering the market. To easier be able to work from anywhere ? the coffee shop, the airplane, the bus stop, I want a Microsoft Surface from Santa. I?ve already written an entire blog post about Microsoft Surface so I won?t delve any deeper here. Since the version I want, Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 Pro, won?t be available until early in 2013, I can?t expect this package under the Christmas tree. But if Santa gives out vouchers, I want to add a $899 gift voucher to the Microsoft Store to my wish list so that I can get it online when it ships.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

That sums up my top five gadgets for this Christmas. Whether you get what you wish for or not under the Christmas tree, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Remember that the best gifts in life are the ones that don?t put a hole in your pocket, like your children?s laughter and a hug from a loved one! Merry Christmas everyone!

Don't be fooled by January pay -- higher taxes loom

21 min.

Workers probably won't feel the full brunt of next year's tax increases in their January paychecks, but don't be fooled by the temporary reprieve.?

No matter what Congress does to address the year-end fiscal cliff, it's already too late for employers to accurately withhold income taxes from January paychecks, unless all the current tax rates remain unchanged, which is an unlikely scenario.?

Social Security payroll taxes are set to increase on Jan. 1, so workers should immediately feel the squeeze of a 2 percent cut in their take-home pay. But as talks drag on over how to address other year-end tax increases, the Internal Revenue Service has delayed releasing income tax withholding tables for 2013.?

As a result, employers are planning to withhold income taxes at the 2012 rates, at least for the first one or two paychecks of the year, said Michael O'Toole of the American Payroll Association.?

If employers don't withhold enough taxes in January, they will have to withhold even more taxes later in the year to make up the difference. Otherwise, taxpayers could get hit with big tax bills, and possibly penalties, when they file their 2013 returns.?

The tax increases could be steep. If Congress fails to act, workers at every income level face significant tax increases next year as part of the year-end "fiscal cliff."?

A taxpayer making between $50,000 and $75,000 would get an average tax increase of $2,400, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $92 a paycheck, on average.?

Someone making between $75,000 and $100,000 would get a tax increase averaging nearly $3,700. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $142 a paycheck.?

O'Toole said it would take most employers two weeks to four weeks to update their payroll systems, once new tax withholding tables are released. For some small businesses, it could take longer.?

"Employers can't really just come up with withholding tables on their own, depending on what the rates are," O'Toole said. "The smaller companies that do not use a payroll processing service probably would have more problems than anyone else."?

On Friday, the IRS said it plans to issue guidance by the end the year, though it won't be early enough to affect paychecks in early January.?

"We are aware that employers have questions with respect to 2013 withholding," the agency said in a written statement. "Since Congress is still considering changes to the tax law, we continue to closely monitor the situation. We intend to issue guidance by the end of the year on appropriate withholding for 2013."?

About three-quarters of taxpayers got tax refunds this year, averaging $2,707, according to the IRS. That gives most taxpayers some leeway to manage their income tax withholding. However, many people rely on tax refunds to pay bills or make major purchases.?

"The reality is, the vast majority of Americans do live paycheck to paycheck and that tax refund is their most significant payday of the year," said Bob Meighan, vice president of TurboTax, an online tax preparation service.?

Most of the expiring tax breaks were first enacted under President George W. Bush and extended under President Barack Obama. Obama campaigned for re-election on extending the tax cuts on incomes below $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for married couples. Obama would let the tax cuts expire on incomes above those amounts.?

Boehner's offer
In negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner, Obama offered to raise the income threshold, limiting tax increases to those making more than $400,000. Boehner, who has argued for years that the tax cuts should be made permanent for everyone, responded by trying to push a bill through the House that would have let many of the tax cuts expire on incomes above $1 million.?

Many Republicans revolted and Boehner, R-Ohio, shelved the bill, sending lawmakers home for the Christmas holiday and leaving the outcome of talks in doubt as the new year approaches.?

If Congress and the White House cannot reach a deal, income tax rates would go up, estate taxes and investment taxes would increase and the alternative minimum tax would hit millions of middle-income people. A temporary payroll tax cut that has benefited nearly every wage earner in 2011 and 2012 expires, costing the average family an additional $1,000 a year by itself.?

In addition, dozens of other tax breaks for businesses and individuals that are routinely renewed each year already expired at the end of 2011. Congress was expected to renew many of them by January, so taxpayers could still claim them on their 2012 tax returns.?

If Congress doesn't act on those tax cuts, businesses would lose a popular tax credit for research and development as well as generous tax breaks for investing in new plants and equipment. Individuals would lose federal tax breaks for paying local sales taxes, buying energy efficient appliances and using mass transit.?

In all, taxes would go up by about $536 billion next year.?

The Best Online Internet Business Opportunity - Affiliate Blogging Tips

If you?re thinking about an easy way to generate income online quickly, legitimately and with very little cash outlay affiliate marketing is your best bet. Affiliates are making lots of money these days because affiliate programs are a win-win for the merchant and affiliate.

What is affiliate marketing?

Very simply, affiliate marketing is based on the sharing of revenues between the website owner and an online merchant who actually produces and sells a tangible product.

This is accomplished when you, the affiliate (who markets and advertises the merchant products or services) refer visitors to the merchant website who then ends up making a purchase. Merchants love affiliates because they provide free advertising and marketing. Affiliates love merchants who offer these plans because it allows them all the benefits of earning great income with none of the headaches of owning a typical business.

Here is an example:

The majority of affiliate websites are information based ? not hard sell product advertisements. Say you have a website all about guitars. People will search for all kinds of guitar related stuff, ?guitars?, ? guitar accessories?, ? guitar repair? , ?guitar strings? etc.. You get the picture. People visit your site filled with great information ? people trust you ? you are giving them what they want and you?re recommending guitar products you feel highly about.

You may have an affiliate link that leads to guitarstuff.com ( merchant site ) where your visitor ends up buying a box of strings. You just made the commission. It?s awesome..

So what are the main advantages of affiliate Marketing?

  1. You don?t need your own products to sell
  2. You don?t have to process any payment
  3. You don?t have to handle or ship the products
  4. You don?t have to handle any complaints
  5. You don?t have to pay anything to join
  6. You can get started immediately, part-time and if you want, gradually go full time..

So now that you understand the basics lets get this understood. It takes knowledge, study and patience. Anyone that tells you any different is dead wrong. Fortunately, if you do study and persist you will make great money. It does work. The nature of affiliate sales marketing is based on doing all the heavy work upfront, which basically requires learning some basic marketing techniques and how to promote and pre-sell products. Once that is done much of the business virtually runs itself.

If you hate working for someone else and want to gradually become independent, affiliate marketing is the best online business opportunity out there. Start learning as much as you can now! .. and be willing to spend some time studying. I?m sure you?ll find it truly exiting when you log into your paypal or click bank account and see commissions generated by people you?ve never seen, many while you were probably asleep! Here are some great resources ( see the author bio below ) :

Research sheds new light on mechanisms of T-ALL, a form of leukemia that primarily affects children

Dec. 23, 2012 ? Acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in children under the age of 14 years. With optimum treatment, approximately 75 percent of children are currently cured, but the treatment consists of severe chemotherapy with many side effects. In collaboration with international research teams, scientists at VIB, KU Leuven and UZ Leuven have identified new genetic mutations that lead to T-ALL, a variant of ALL. They have unmasked the ribosome -- the molecular machine in the cell that is involved in the production of proteins -- as a weak spot in leukemia cells.

Their research has also shown that there is a difference in T-ALL between adults and children. Both findings can be important in the search for improved treatments for T-ALL.

Jan Cools (VIB/KU Leuven): "We have discovered that there is a clear genetic difference between T-ALL in children and in adults. This could be an explanation why adults do not respond as well to the current therapy."

Stein Aerts (KU Leuven): "This is a beautiful example of the power of genome sequencing in cancer research. New technologies and large-scale bio-informatics allow us to study a lot of data simultaneously. This allows us to discover links that would have been impossible to find in the past."

T-cell acute lymphatic leukemia (T-ALL)

The formation of white blood cells is disrupted by leukemia. The cells in the bone marrow that should mature into white blood cells multiply unchecked without maturing completely. These immature blood cells compromise the production of normal blood cells. This makes patients more susceptible to infections. Leukemia occurs in different forms; in the case of T-ALL, there is an accumulation of immature white blood cells over a very short period of time. With optimum treatment -- involving chemotherapy -- approximately 75 % of children are currently cured. For adults, the chance of a cure is below 50 %. Chemotherapy is associated with many side effects. The search for a more specific treatment can only start once we know what causes T-ALL.

7 new genes with a key role in T-ALL identified

T-ALL only occurs if errors in various genes occur simultaneously. It is important to determine which genes play a key role. Kim De Keersmaecker, Zeynep Kalender Atak, Jan Cools and Stein Aerts have identified a series of defects in 15 important genes, of which 7 have not previously been associated with T-ALL. They used next-generation sequencing to analyze the 20,000+ genes of 67 T-ALL patients. This technique allows for very fast analysis and comparison of the complete DNA sequence of healthy and sick individuals.

A difference between adults and children

The investigators from Leuven also discovered a difference between T-ALL in children and in adults. T-ALL in adults contains significantly more mutations than in children. The leukemia cells in adults also contain mutations in other genes than in children. This genetic difference could be a possible explanation why adults do not respond as well to the current therapy.

A weak point in leukemia cells exposed

RPL5 and RPL10 -- two newly identified genes -- form part of the ribosome: this is the complex in the cell that produces proteins. The scientists hereby demonstrated for the first time that defects in the ribosome can also play a role in cancer activation. Experiments in yeast cells confirm that mutations in RPL10 cause a change in the ribosome.

Kim De Keersmaecker (VIB/KU Leuven): "This could be a weak point of the leukemia cells: all cells need properly functioning ribosomes to survive and to grow. These 'defective' ribosomes in the leukemia cells could be a new suitable target for the development of targeted therapies."

The 500 phases of matter: New system successfully classifies symmetry-protected phases

Dec. 21, 2012 ? Forget solid, liquid, and gas: there are in fact more than 500 phases of matter. In a major paper in a recent issue of Science, Perimeter Faculty member Xiao-Gang Wen reveals a modern reclassification of all of them.

Condensed matter physics -- the branch of physics responsible for discovering and describing most of these phases -- has traditionally classified phases by the way their fundamental building blocks -- usually atoms -- are arranged. The key is something called symmetry.

To understand symmetry, imagine flying through liquid water in an impossibly tiny ship: the atoms would swirl randomly around you and every direction -- whether up, down, or sideways -- would be the same. The technical term for this is "symmetry" -- and liquids are highly symmetric. Crystal ice, another phase of water, is less symmetric. If you flew through ice in the same way, you would see the straight rows of crystalline structures passing as regularly as the girders of an unfinished skyscraper. Certain angles would give you different views. Certain paths would be blocked, others wide open. Ice has many symmetries -- every "floor" and every "room" would look the same, for instance -- but physicists would say that the high symmetry of liquid water is broken.

Classifying the phases of matter by describing their symmetries and where and how those symmetries break is known as the Landau paradigm. More than simply a way of arranging the phases of matter into a chart, Landau's theory is a powerful tool which both guides scientists in discovering new phases of matter and helps them grapple with the behaviours of the known phases. Physicists were so pleased with Landau's theory that for a long time they believed that all phases of matter could be described by symmetries. That's why it was such an eye-opening experience when they discovered a handful of phases that Landau couldn't describe.

Beginning in the 1980s, condensed matter researchers, including Xiao-Gang Wen -- now a faculty member at Perimeter Institute -- investigated new quantum systems where numerous ground states existed with the same symmetry. Wen pointed out that those new states contain a new kind of order: topological order. Topological order is a quantum mechanical phenomenon: it is not related to the symmetry of the ground state, but instead to the global properties of the ground state's wave function. Therefore, it transcends the Landau paradigm, which is based on classical physics concepts.

Topological order is a more general understanding of quantum phases and the transitions between them. In the new framework, the phases of matter were described not by the patterns of symmetry in the ground state, but by the patterns of a decidedly quantum property -- entanglement. When two particles are entangled, certain measurements performed on one of them immediately affect the other, no matter how far apart the particles are. The patterns of such quantum effects, unlike the patterns of the atomic positions, could not be described by their symmetries. If you were to describe a city as a topologically ordered state from the cockpit of your impossibly tiny ship, you'd no longer be describing the girders and buildings of the crystals you passed, but rather invisible connections between them -- rather like describing a city based on the information flow in its telephone system.

This more general description of matter developed by Wen and collaborators was powerful -- but there were still a few phases that didn't fit. Specifically, there were a set of short-range entangled phases that did not break the symmetry, the so-called symmetry-protected topological phases. Examples of symmetry-protected phases include some topological superconductors and topological insulators, which are of widespread immediate interest because they show promise for use in the coming first generation of quantum electronics.

In the paper featured in Science, Wen and collaborators reveal a new system which can, at last, successfully classify these symmetry-protected phases.

Using modern mathematics -- specifically group cohomology theory and group super-cohomology theory -- the researchers have constructed and classified the symmetry-protected phases in any number of dimensions and for any symmetries. Their new classification system will provide insight about these quantum phases of matter, which may in turn increase our ability to design states of matter for use in superconductors or quantum computers.

This paper is a revealing look at the intricate and fascinating world of quantum entanglement, and an important step toward a modern reclassification of all phases of matter.

Greeks flock to informal work as recession deepens

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek dietician Reggina knew she had little choice when her boss told her she could keep her job at a health center only if she agreed to getting part of her salary off the books.

With Greece sinking deeper into recession and no other jobs to be found, she meekly agreed last year to monthly pay of 160 euros in cash and 700 euros on the books - allowing her struggling firm to pay lower social security contributions.

At 26, Reggina had joined the ranks of a growing number of young Greeks resorting to informal work to get by during an economic crisis that has left Greece with a youth unemployment rate of 56 percent - the highest in the euro zone.

"It's not just psychological war, it's abuse," said Reggina, who like others declined to give her full name because of the illegal nature of her work.

"I get fewer social security vouchers and I can't get a loan because my salary on paper is so low. But they tell us if we talk about this, we'll lose our jobs."

Data suggests informal work in Greece - which already has one of the largest grey economies in the euro zone - is rising quickly, fuelled by both cash-strapped businesses trying to save on contributions to the state and desperation among job-seekers.

In the first half of the year informal workers accounted for 35 percent of about 30,000 employees during checks by the SEPE agency that inspects firms, up five percentage points from 2011. More than half of them were Greeks and 41 percent were migrants.

Most of them were employed in the construction sector or in family businesses like restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. The number of self-employed in Greece - another indicator of the rise in informal work - now stands at 31 percent of workers, twice the euro zone average, says Athens-based think-tank IOBE.

"When the recession is so deep, labor rights are among the first to be sacrificed," said SEPE Director Michalis Kandarakis.

"They become less important for employers."

TAKING ADVANTAGE

Unionists allege businesses have become so innovative in finding ways to cut costs during the crisis that some companies have even deposited salaries but demanded part of the money back in cash a few days later or paid workers in supermarket coupons.

They argue the efforts of Greece's international lenders to loosen strict labor laws have only made matters worse, allowing employers to use part-time or flexible contracts to pay workers the minimum possible on the books and the rest under the table.

"Many businesses, even profitable ones, are taking advantage of the crisis to make money out of it," said Nikos Kioutsoukis, general secretary of private sector union GSEE.

"The government's policies prescribed by the lenders are wrong and push young people to the black market for labor. Informal work will spiral out of control if this continues."

He estimates as many as 35 percent of Greek workers toil off the books in one form or the other, with some self-employed workers turning to it to avoid high taxes and others forced into it by businesses aware of the limited choice job-seekers have.

At the other end of the spectrum, young Greeks say conditions in the job market are so dire they consider themselves fortunate to have even an informal job - despite not knowing if they will ever get the money they were promised.

Costas, a 23-year-old university student, became a waiter this summer on the agreement he would get a paltry 35 euros for working an 8-hour day. In the end, he says he was only paid 70 euros a week and kicked out three months later when he spoke up.

"When I dared to speak up I was simply fired. There are so many people looking for a job out there, why should they keep me?" he said.

"The negotiation with every potential employer starts from the amount that he is willing to give, not the contract terms. It's obvious that it will be off the books."

AN UPHILL BATTLE

The rising levels of informal work come at a heavy price for a cash-strapped state reliant on aid loans to stay afloat.

With unemployment and informal work both rising, the country's largest pension fund IKA-ETAM expects welfare contributions to fall about 7.5 percent this year - depriving the state of about 800 million euros compared to a year earlier.

A report by an EU task force this week also cited undeclared work as a "major issue" affecting Greece, saying it "endangered" the viability of the country's social security system.

Greece's conservative-led coalition - under pressure from lenders to boost tax revenues - has promised to crack down on the phenomenon by increasing fines and reinforcing the SEPE agency that inspects businesses on compliance with labor laws.

"We have declared war against informal work and benefits evasion," Labour Minister Yannis Vroutsis told Reuters.

"The crisis cannot be an alibi for those violating the law. Businesses breaking the rules have no excuse anymore."

But the government is fighting an uphill battle.

Despite reforms making it easier to hire and fire workers and lowering the minimum wage, Greeks still pay the highest social security contributions in Europe - giving them an incentive to sidestep formal labor contracts, IOBE says.

Lack of trust in a political system seen as corrupt and unfair, strong family bonds that encourage work in family businesses and a long history of a flourishing grey economy have all allowed informal work to grow, IOBE says.

Yannis, a 38-year old construction worker who has always worked informally, is one Greek who sees no incentive to change.

"We all work like this and so do I. We can't keep paying a state that takes 40 or even 50 percent off our wages through taxes," he said. "I'm sorry but I have children and I have to pay to feed and dress them."

Others like Reggina still bristle at the ignominy of being paid under the table. But a lack of alternative jobs has meant she too has moved further into the same informal economy she blames for her misfortunes.

"Now I do it myself: I see clients at home and don't give them receipts," she said. "I'm not ashamed about this, I have no choice."

Clamour for funds as cancer boy is treated | The Times

Parents, clinicians and charities have called for extra funding to tackle childhood brain tumours and limit the debilitating side-effects of treatment.

It comes as a judge ordered that a seven-year-old boy should have radiotherapy against his mother?s wishes. Mr Justice Bodey rejected the arguments of Sally Roberts that her gravely ill son, Neon, should not have the treatment because of the potential side-effects. Ordering that Neon have radiotherapy as soon as possible, the judge said: ?The mother has been through a very stressful time. This sort of news is a parent?s nightmare and I have sympathy for her.?

Russian parliament passes anti-US adoption measure

MOSCOW (AP) ? The lower house of the Russian parliament on Friday overwhelmingly passed a bill that would ban adoption of Russian children by Americans, sending the controversial legislation a step closer to President Vladimir Putin's desk.

Putin hasn't said whether he will sign the measure into law if it passes its next stage of being approved by the upper house.

Some top government officials including the foreign minister and the education minister have spoken flatly against the bill, one part of a larger measure by angry lawmakers retaliating against a recently signed U.S. law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators.

It nonetheless received strong approval in Friday's third reading in the State Duma, passing by a vote of 420-7-1. The upper house, the Federation Council, is likely to consider the measure on Wednesday, vice-speaker Alexander Torshin was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

Torshin said there is "serious basis for supposing the draft bill will be supported by the Federation Council."

Originally the bill was more or less a tit-for-tat response, providing for travel sanctions and the seizure of financial assets in Russia of Americans determined to have violated the rights of Russians.

But it was expanded to include the adoption measure and call for the banning of any organizations that are engaged in political activities if they receive funding from U.S. citizens or are determined to be a threat to Russia's interests. In addition, it calls for anyone with dual Russian-U.S. citizenship to be banned as members of political organizations.

The U.S. said the adoption law would needlessly stop hundreds of Russian children from finding families.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to be linked to other issues in our bilateral relationship," U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul said in a statement.

The bill is a dramatic demonstration of two strains of animosity toward the United States. The Russian political establishment resents the United States for allegedly meddling in the country's internal affairs; Putin has charged that opposition protests over the past year were the work of U.S.-funded troublemakers. Many Russians are angered by cases of adopted children abused in America and by the alleged lenience of courts in these cases.

The Duma bill is named in honor of Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler who was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Anger over abuse peaked in 2010 when an American woman sent her 7-year-old adopted Russian son back to Moscow on a plane alone, saying he had emotional problems and she could no longer care for him.

Despite abuse cases, Russian critics of the bill say it would ultimately victimize orphans by depriving them of an opportunity to escape often-dismal Russian orphanages. There are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, according to UNICEF. Russians historically have been less inclined to adopt children than in many other cultures.

More than 60,000 Russian children have been adopted in the United States in the past 20 years, McFaul said.

But Russia's children's ombudsman Pavel Astakhov, one of the strongest critics of U.S. abuse cases, says the solution is for Russia to adopt a national program to improve orphans' prospects.

"It's necessary to strictly hold to the principle of priority for Russian adopters," he told Interfax after the Duma vote.

Warhol's Mao Paintings Censored from Chinese Exhibitions

Andy Warhol, ?Mao #91? (1972) (Image via artradarjournal.com)

You can catch him on giant posters, on the walls of living rooms, and in sculptural bust form in restaurants, but there?s one place in China you won?t be seeing Chairman Mao this year ? art museums. The Chinese government has removed 10 of Andy Warhol?s Mao paintings from the mainland stops of the traveling exhibition Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Warhol?s death.

The exhibition, which was curated by Pittsburgh?s Andy Warhol Museum, includes more than 300 paintings, photographs, and films by Warhol, including his famed Campbell?s Soup can screen prints, and portraits of Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, reports Bloomberg. At the show?s stop in Singapore and its current iteration in Hong Kong, the ten Mao portraits are fully present, but for its upcoming Beijing and Shanghai versions, the government has deemed the portraits inappropriate for their ?political sensitivity.?

Perhaps the CCP doesn?t like the portraits because the color sensibility is a little too garish, or maybe because Warhol didn?t exactly color within the lines. But the Pop artist?s portraits actually pay homage to the dictator?s omnipresent celebrity, a ubiquitous quality that Warhol appreciated. Warhol came by his inspiration authentically, too ??he visited Beijing in 1982 and had a snapshot taken in front of Mao?s visage mounted in Tiananmen Square.

Andy Warhol Museum director Eric Shiner is right to be sad that the Maos won?t make it. ?This is disappointing because [Warhol's] imagery is so mainstream in Chinese contemporary art,? he laments. Ai Weiwei has called Warhol one of his heroes, and artists like Yue Minjun lift directly from Pop?s signature manic pitch and flattening of high and low culture.

Warhol?s Maos won?t have their 15 minutes of fame on the mainland, but they?ll be restored to the exhibition at its final stop in Tokyo, where Takashi Murakami will doubtless appreciate their presence.

Earlier cancer diagnosis by detecting biomarkers in urine

These nanoparticles created by MIT engineers can act as synthetic biomarkers for disease. The particles (brown) are coated with peptides (blue) that are cleaved by enzymes (green) found at the disease site. The peptides then accumulate in the urine, where they can be detected using mass spectrometry. (Credit: Justin H. Lo)

Specific proteins secreted by cancer cells circulating in the bloodstream could help diagnose cancer earlier, but the quantity of these biomarkers is so low that detecting them has proven difficult.

Now MIT researchers, led by Sangeeta Bhatia, have developed nanoparticles that interact with cancer proteins to produce thousands of biomarkers that can be easily detected in the patient?s urine.

This biomarker amplification system could also be used to monitor disease progression and track how tumors respond to treatment, says Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and a member of MIT?s David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research.

The search has been complicated because genomic studies have revealed that many cancers, such as breast cancer, are actually groups of several diseases with different genetic signatures, she says.

The MIT team, working with researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, described the new technology in a paper appearing in?Nature Biotechnology?on Dec. 16. Lead author of the paper is Gabriel Kwong, a postdoc in MIT?s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and the Koch Institute.

Amplifying cancer signals

Cancer cells produce many proteins not found in healthy cells. However, these proteins are often so diluted in the bloodstream that they are nearly impossible to identify. A recent study from Stanford University researchers found that even using the best existing biomarkers for ovarian cancer, and the best technology to detect them, an ovarian tumor would not be found until eight to 10 years after it formed.

?The cell is making biomarkers, but it has limited production capacity,? Bhatia says. ?That?s when we had this ?aha? moment: What if you could deliver something that could amplify that signal??

Serendipitously, Bhatia?s lab was already working on nanoparticles that could be put to use detecting cancer biomarkers. Originally intended as imaging agents for tumors, the particles interact with enzymes known as proteases, which cleave proteins into smaller fragments.

Cancer cells often produce large quantities of proteases known as MMPs. These proteases help cancer cells escape their original locations and spread uncontrollably by cutting through proteins of the extracellular matrix, which normally holds cells in place.

The researchers coated their nanoparticles with peptides (short protein fragments) targeted by several of the MMP proteases. The treated nanoparticles accumulate at tumor sites, making their way through the leaky blood vessels that typically surround tumors. There, the proteases cleave hundreds of peptides from the nanoparticles, releasing them into the bloodstream.

The peptides rapidly accumulate in the kidneys and are excreted in the urine, where they can be detected using mass spectrometry.

This new system is an exciting approach to overcoming the problem of biomarker scarcity in the body, says Sanjiv Gambhir, chairman of the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. ?Instead of being dependent on the body to naturally shed biomarkers, you?re sampling the site of interest and causing biomarkers that you engineered to be released,? says Gambhir, who was not part of the research team.

Distinctive signatures

To make the biomarker readings as precise as possible, the researchers designed their particles to express 10 different peptides, each of which is cleaved by a different one of the dozens of MMP proteases. Each of these peptides is a different size, making it possible to distinguish them with mass spectrometry. This should allow researchers to identify distinct signatures associated with different types of tumors.

In this study, the researchers tested their nanoparticles? ability to detect the early stages of colorectal cancer in mice, and to monitor the progression of liver fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis is an accumulation of scarring in response to liver injury or chronic liver disease. Patients with this condition have to be regularly monitored by biopsy, which is expensive and invasive, to make sure they are getting the right treatment. In mice, the researchers found that the nanoparticles could offer much more rapid feedback than biopsies.

They also found that the nanoparticles could accurately reveal the early formation of colorectal tumors. In ongoing studies, the team is studying the particles? ability to measure tumor response to chemotherapy and to detect metastasis.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Kathy and Curt Marble Cancer Research Fund.

How to Balance a Checkbook? | Law Offices of Merwyn J. Miller Blog

I once heard a joke that went, ?The last check you ever write should be to the undertaker and it should balance.?? Of course, the joke is funny because doing so would be nearly impossible, if not irresponsible.? Since it is impossible to know when you will die, it is impossible to know exactly how much money you need to live.? However, the truth in the quip is that you can?t take your money with you, so you may as well spend some of it.

When planning an estate, we often talk about how to pay for your future medical costs and long term care and how to plan for a long retirement.? We speak about the legacy you will leave behind.? We also talk about how to avoid estate taxes and whether particular types of trusts, entities, or regular gifting would be helpful to preserving as much of your estate for your beneficiaries as possible.? These are, of course, worthwhile and important goals.? Avoiding leaving attorneys and the government as your primary beneficiaries is one of the primary functions of estate planning.? As such, your estate plan should not only help you avoid the need for probate but also avoid the potential for challenges in order to lower the costs of administering your estate.? Your estate plan should also allow as much of your funds as possible to be sheltered from the estate tax, when it applies.

However, it is important to remember that many roads may lead to the same destination.? Considering long-term care insurance and planning for government benefits such as Medi-Cal and VA Aid & Attendance Non-Service Connected Disability Pension, for example, could help you prevent your bills from burdening your family while preserving some of your assets.? Similarly, life insurance could help cover funeral and other administrative costs that result from your passing.? Over time, the premiums may be significantly less than what your beneficiaries ultimately receive.? Additionally, depending on the size of your estate, the payout will be tax-favored.

After full consideration of your options, perhaps you will decide to spend some of your money!? After a lifetime of saving for retirement, you might like to take an extended European vacation.? Maybe there is a dream car you have always wanted or some jewelry you have had your eye on.? Shifting your focus slightly from how your money will be spent when you are ill and how it will be distributed after you have died to how you would like to spend it can be an invigorating experience!? Particularly for individuals with taxable estates, it may be possible to ?spend down? below the taxable threshold while preserving a sizable inheritance for your loved ones.
As with any form of financial planning, estate planning is about finding balance.? With a reasoned approach to your plan, you may find that it is better to spend some of what would be your children?s inheritance on a family trip, the memories of which will last long after you have passed.? Even though your last check may not balance, remember that your estate plan is about you and what you choose to do with your assets.? Enjoy them while you can!

The MGW Blade Platform sets itself apart from other blade solutions due to its smart centralized controller blade that manages all system blades and automates fail-over between blades to achieve 'Five Nines'? high availability for IPTV services while consolidating all management and video streaming traffic to one blade for maximum efficiency.

'The Optibase MGW Blade Systems is the gold standard for carrier-grade architecture and video quality. As content providers and internet video services break boundaries and increasingly expand global offerings, demand for higher density and efficient ways to deploy IPTV systems gains more complexity,'? said Eli Garten, Vice President of Product Management at VITEC. 'The new multi-audio enhancement complements our best-in-class video encoding density. This unique advantage helps our Tier-1 and Tier-2 customers as well as multi-national corporations to deploy IPTV services, which serve multiple markets and viewers with less equipment and reduced CAPEX.'?
