Orange County native Liz Lord put up a fierce battle against brain cancer over the last 10 months, but today she took her last breath.
A Facebook message posted early today on the Liz Lord Fundraiser I Orange County Chapter page says, "My sister Liz was an inspiration to so many people, and true to form she put up one hell of a fight the last ten months. Liz passed away in her sleep this morning around 9 a.m."
Lord, 27, had a reputation for being a stellar volleyball competitor during her time at Newport Harbor High School, where she graduated from in 2002. She moved to Oregon after receiving a full volleyball scholarship to the University of Portland and in March 2010 was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer.
Last year's? Battle of the Bay, between Corona del Mar and NHHS boys' volleyball teams, helped to raise money for Lord's medical bills.
Friends and members of the community have been leaving messages in remembrance of Liz on Facebook throughout the day.
